This video highlights a critical issue with camera-based perception systems for vessel autonomy. These systems are highly vulnerable to disruptions when visibility is poor or the field of view is obstructed, as demonstrated by thick fog. Such conditions render advanced navigation and unmanned systems reliant on cameras unsafe precisely when they are needed the most. Alternatively, radars are standard equipment on most commercial and recreational vessels and offer greater reliability compared to more specialized camera or infrared systems. More workforce woes for the maritime domain. This one has direct national security ramifications. Workforce issues are the largest driver for marine autonomy across industries.
