Nearly 80 percent of all federal ACA marketplace plans have an agent or broker assisting with enrollment. Health agents and brokers work hard to listen to the consumer and match them with the best plans for their family’s needs. But here's the real issue: For years, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has run a poorly managed marketplace rife with bad actors. When you leave the backdoor open, you cannot be surprised that bad things happen. Now, in an election year, CMS finally decided to do something about it. This is no surprise to anyone who remembers the debacle of the Healthcare.gov rollout. Bad actors must be held accountable, but the true scandal lies in the escalating costs of care. Rather than touting the $100 million spent on government-funded enrollment agents, CMS should prioritize tackling the rising costs of health plans. A good place for CMS to learn from is the state-run exchanges who have shown that it’s possible to have better results and fewer bad enrollments.
