We’re looking for someone whose reporting and analysis will illuminate and explain complex issues, who is adept at finding stories that influence public discourse and have real impact on policy and the people working to address the range of challenges our state faces, in part by holding those in power to account. Rather than reporting the news, this writer will go beyond the latest headline and explain what the news means and who it will affect. Through republication partnerships, outside appearances on other media platforms and occasional MinnPost events, this writer’s work will help grow MinnPost’s reach and impact while solidifying our place in the broader Minnesota media ecosystem as the trusted, go-to source for in-depth, explanatory journalism on state government and politics. The writer will be based at the Minnesota State Capitol during legislative sessions and will be expected to regularly attend meetings and events in-person, developing sources and story ideas through regular engagement with people working both within and outside of state government. The writer will also be expected to regularly engage with colleagues and editors, contributing to a collaborative team keen on ensuring our stories engage audiences on multiple platforms through great writing, data visualizations and multimedia elements. Relevant skills: * Outstanding writing skills and the ability to bring a distinctive voice to stories, newsletter intros and social media posts * High-level enterprise reporting and analytical skills * Data literacy, especially with government data and documents * Demonstrated track record with enterprising, in-depth reporting, preferably with experience covering state government or a similar beat * Ability to multitask and work on deadline, turning stories quickly to maximize reach and impact * Self-starting, proactive attitude and experience with collaborating with colleagues * An interest in audience engagement and experience speaking at events and on other media about their reporting There are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who hold important skills we haven’t listed. New Job at NABJcareers.org Deputy Texas Editor: Austin, Texas ProPublica Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. This role will be open until at least 6 p.m. ET Monday, Dec. 16, 2024. ProPublica is hiring a deputy editor to help lead our partnerships with local newsrooms across Texas as we work together to produce impactful investigative journalism. The position is part of an expanding collaboration between ProPublica and The Texas Tribune, which joined together five years ago to form a joint investigative unit focused on this diverse and critical state. Over that time, the partnership has produced ambitious and vital work that has spurred impact. After the team reported that hundreds of soldiers charged with offenses like sexual assault and domestic violence were allowed to leave the Army instead of facing trial, the military branch stopped allowing commanders to make such decisions on their own. The Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed sweeping new regulations to make portable generators safer in the wake of our reporting about carbon monoxide poisoning. Texas legislators closed a juvenile background check loophole in response to the team’s reporting that uncovered critical omissions. The team was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist for its analysis of the flawed police response to the Uvalde school shooting. Now we are looking for a deputy editor who will work with the Texas editor to guide the joint investigative unit and help launch a new initiative to partner with five newsrooms across the state on accountability and investigative projects. These partnerships would offer local newsrooms stipends, training and the support of a dedicated editor, as well as other resources to pursue accountability and investigative stories around a single topic. This role will be focused on developing, managing and editing accountability stories through these partnerships and with the Texas team. You’ll be juggling a variety of high-level projects, weighing in on story selection and direction, guiding the reporting and writing process, handling big-picture editing and line editing, and navigating the complexities of collaborative journalism. We are looking for a strong investigative editor with a history of managing collaborations. This role is based in Texas and reports to the Texas editor for the ProPublica-Texas Tribune Investigative Unit. What you would be doing: * Developing and nurturing partnerships with newsrooms across Texas to work on revelatory, important accountability stories and projects. * Working in collaboration with partner newsrooms to produce stories that can take various forms, from newspaper-style takeouts to long-form, audio and video pieces. * Supervising the reporting and writing of pieces by reporters in local newsrooms and supervising reporters who are part of the Texas… See more jobs on the NABJ Career Center at NABJCareers.org #NABJJobAlerts

New Job at NABJcareers.org Senior reporter, immigration: Chicago, Illinois Injustice Watch Injustice Watch is hiring a senior reporter to investigate topics at the intersection of immigration and the court system in Cook County and Illinois. Chicago has one of the country’s busiest immigration courts, with more than a quarter million pending cases, a number that is certain to rise if President-elect Trump follows through on his campaign promises to conduct the largest mass deportation in U.S. history. But Cook County’s 1.1 million immigrants also regularly interact with the local court system in numerous ways — as parents in child custody cases, plaintiffs in civil lawsuits, and defendants in criminal cases. The patchwork of systems serving Chicago’s diverse immigrant communities and the complex web of legal systems with which they interact will be the focus of this reporter’s investigations. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of the immigration court system and has covered immigration on a local level. We’re looking for someone with a track record of enterprise and investigative reporting. This job is for someone who is committed to listening to and centering communities disproportionately affected by the legal system and to reporting through a racial equity lens.
