The mission of the NAD is to preserve, protect and promote the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf Americans.
About us
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is the nation's premier civil rights organization of, by and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. Established in 1880, the NAD was shaped by deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true to this day, with American Sign Language as a core value. The advocacy scope of the NAD is broad, covering a lifetime and impacting future generations in the areas of early intervention, education, employment, health care, technology, telecommunications, youth leadership, and more – improving the lives of millions of deaf and hard of hearing Americans. The NAD also carries out its federal advocacy work through coalition efforts with specialized national deaf and hard of hearing organizations, as well as coalitions representing national cross-disability organizations. The NAD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported by the generosity of individual and organizational donors, including corporations and foundations.

Image description: ID: On the right is seated Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins, interim CEO of NAD. She is a white woman, wearing black glasses. She has shoulder length blonde hair, and is wearing a black sweater. On the left is seated Kelby Brick, Esq., a white-presenting man. He is bald, and has a beard. He is wearing a mauve shirt, and a gray blazer. Transcript: Bobbie Beth: Hello! In my last video, I discussed my work within NAD Headquarters (specifically operations). I’ve been working on restructuring things, connecting people and responsibilities, and improving organizational efficiency. With that in mind, I have some amazing news to share with you today. I would love to introduce the person who will become NAD's new Chief Operating Officer - Mr. Kelby Brick, Esq. Kelby is not a stranger to NAD, he used to work here, and had a variety of positions within the organization. He's been very active in state associations, and has also been very active in the community at large, in addition to his previous work at NAD. So, I want to extend a warm "Welcome Back to the NAD family" to Kelby! Kelby: Thank you so much, Dr. Scoggins. I am truly delighted and honored that you've asked me to join you here at NAD. The NAD has always been near and dear to my heart. Since my work here at NAD, I have had a variety of different positions in various places. I've held senior executive positions in private, government, and non-profit organizations. I've managed organizations with budgets exceeding $100 million. I've managed organizations with over 1500 staff reporting to me. I've always looked up to the organization of NAD. The work that NAD does impacts our lives every day. When Dr. Scoggins asked me to become involved again, my answer was a resounding, "Yes!" We are here at NAD to preserve, protect, and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people. We will focus on improving employment opportunities, educational opportunities, and language access. This all forms a construct I like to call the "Deaf Ecosystem". I am very excited to work with you, Dr. Scoggins. Bobbie Beth: I am, as well! Kelby: I look forward to supporting NAD's next efforts, to support and serve the community. Bobbie Beth: I want to include the community in our "high five" for Kelby and NAD! Kelby: I'm really excited about this. - - - End slide: Save the dates: Jr. NAD Conference: Oct 15-19, 2025 New Mexico School for the Deaf, Santa Fe, NM NAD Leadership Training Conference (NLTC): Oct 29 - Nov 2, 2025, Austin, Texas NAD Conference: June 28 - July 4, 2026 San Francisco, CA
