About us
The National Alliance of Forest Owners (NAFO) is an advocacy organization committed to advancing federal policies that support the long-term economic, social, and environmental benefits of sustainably managed privately-owned forests. NAFO member companies own and manage more than 46 million acres of private working forests in 34 states. NAFO’s membership also includes state and national associations representing tens of millions of additional acres. The U.S. is a global leader in modern forestry, setting some of the highest standards for sustainable forest management in the world. Private forest owners are at the forefront of sustainable forestry in the U.S. The result is healthy and resilient forests that provide an unparalleled set of benefits to support our climate, water, wildlife, and rural communities.

Forests are essential for life on Earth. They provide habitat for countless species, capture carbon from the atmosphere, and supply our communities with the renewable products we use every day. But a new article by NCASI, Inc. argues that to fully protect these benefits, active forest management is essential. While some believe forests should be left untouched, NCASI’s article highlights that many U.S. forests face challenges caused by past human activities and modern threats, like invasive pests and increased wildfire risk. These factors have left forests out of balance, making them less capable of supporting the biodiversity they once did. The article emphasizes that many species in need of conservation rely on specific forest conditions, such as open canopies or young, regenerating forests. These conditions can sometimes only be created through harvesting and active management. Without this, only certain species benefit, leaving other species at risk. Active management doesn’t just support biodiversity—it also helps restore forest types that were once common, like oak woodlands, while reducing fire risk and combating invasive species. NCASI’s article shows that a balanced approach, combining managed forests and areas left untouched, is necessary to protect ecosystems and the species that depend on them. Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) proposed new protections for the monarch butterfly. In the press release, Dave Tenny, President and CEO of NAFO, stated: “The members of the National Alliance of Forest Owners use sustainable forest management to provide forest products and jobs in a way that cleans our air and water and provides abundant wildlife habitat for the long term. Sustaining wildlife is as foundational to the modern culture of private forest owners as sustaining rural communities. We need both, and we view them as mutually dependent. This stewardship ethic is especially beneficial to monarch butterflies and other pollinators, because we intentionally provide the habitat they need as an essential part of our businesses. By managing our forests in this way, we do our part to help monarchs thrive while helping people take pride in knowing they are part of a conservation solution." NCASI, Inc. enthusiastically assisted with National Alliance of Forest Owners (NAFO)’s overhauled data visualization platform, ForestCarbonDataViz.org. NCASI provided NAFO with analyses and a summary of the underlying data to support a science-based understanding of the importance of forests as part of the climate solution. #NAFO #NCASI #datavisualization #forestry #climate
Explore how forests play a key role in addressing climate change with the recently overhauled ForestCarbonDataViz.org. This platform, created by NAFO, with data analysis by NCASI, Inc., uses clear data visuals to show the relationships between forests and climate, based on updated U.S. Forest Service methodologies and other public data. The tool now features improved mobile usability, updated FIA data, and a new sustainability module that highlights forest age class distribution and carbon storage capacity. Visit the site to learn how forests are a critical part of the US climate strategy.

Working forests provide beneficial habitat for pollinators. Our work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is ensuring monarch butterflies and other wildlife can thrive across working forests. Meg Hedeen, a biologist and pollinator expert with the USFWS, says, "I'm thrilled to be part of this collaboration between NAFO and FWS. Together, we are integrating practices that not only sustain and expand working forests but also support our vital pollinators.” Read how collaboration fuels conservation success in this USFWS article: https://lnkd.in/eC9upatr
