  • This holiday season, we invite you to stand with NAFSA in advancing international education by supporting our vital public policy and advocacy efforts. Your generosity can help ensure that our voice is strong, strategic, and ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of a new administration and Congress. Whether it’s $25, $50, or $100, every donation is an investment in the resources we have at our disposal to push forward—and push back, as needed—policies and practices that impact the students and scholars that depend on us. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, every gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000! That means your support can go twice as far. • 🔦 We’re shining a spotlight on the 2024 recipients of the Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization! 🔦 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) encourages its students to apply what they learn inside the classroom outside of it by requiring several collaborative projects for graduation. Completing these projects abroad helps students not only gain practical, problem-solving experience but also develop intercultural skills, which are crucial in today’s globalized world. To get more students out of the United States, WPI launched Global Projects for All—an initiative to grow participation in its Global Projects Program and the effort for which WPI received its second Spotlight Award. “Our off-campus project experiences immerse students in diverse cultures and work in interdisciplinary teams to tackle complex real-world problems,” says Mimi Sheller, dean of WPI’s Global School. “When students have opportunities to apply their knowledge out in the world, they develop new perspectives, become well equipped to lead, and are meaningfully enriched, personally and professionally.” Check out the profile on WPI in Internationalizing the Campus 2024 (ITC) to learn how the institution scaled up its Global Projects Program by opening new project sites, training more faculty, and establishing a scholarship to defray costs for students, among other efforts. • 🔦 We’re shining a spotlight on the 2024 recipients of the Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization! 🔦 New international students in the United States face the same obstacles as domestic students when adjusting to the higher demands of education at the tertiary level—with the added challenges of learning and living in a new culture and language. Leaders at Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs worked to address the specific needs of these students by embedding international student support within academic advising at the two schools, leading to a 91.5% retention rate in fall 2022. “We’re really proud of what we’ve built here,” says Assistant Dean of Student Success Steve Schaffling. “And we’re excited to see how it can benefit even more students in the years to come.” Read the profile on this Spotlight Award recipient in Internationalizing the Campus 2024 (ITC) to learn more about Syracuse’s International Student Success Model and how it’s influencing the approach to international student support across the university—and at other institutions nationwide.
