Throughout his life, Greg has experienced anxiety, depression, and addiction as a result of traumatic events in his childhood. He stopped using alcohol in 2012, but it wasn’t until he came to NAMI last year that he explored his mental health diagnosis. With the help of his clinical team and the NAMI staff, Greg received a formal diagnosis of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). “I stopped using alcohol on 12/2/12, but it wasn't until I came to NAMI that I learned that there's a term for the effects of what had happened to me: CPTSD. The anxiety, depression, ADHD and alcohol dependence were the direct result of and a normal human response to CPTSD. I became a part of a group of people who have a lot in common with me,” said Greg. This year, Greg interned at NAMI at became trained as a Connections Support Group facilitator. Through leading support groups, Greg has strengthened his own recovery and is able to give back to the community. “Leading groups requires me to pay attention to and get to know people who have a wide variety of mental illnesses in a non-judgmental way. I no longer define people by their diagnosis. There are no schizophrenics, only those who suffer from schizophrenia. Doing so facilitates self-acceptance as well.” When you make a gift to NAMI McHenry County, you fund FREE programs and services to support individuals, families, and the broader community. Your donation helps us grow and sustain our one-on-one support, support groups, classes, and community presentations. We are counting on the overwhelming support of our community to ensure our success and expansion. Will you make a donation to support NAMI’s life-changing programs and services? Together, we can provide hope and support to individuals, families, and the broader community. We can’t do it without you! https://lnkd.in/gaSchY9k

Throughout her life, Jimena has struggled with eating disorders, self harm, anxiety, and depression. As her mental health deteriorated in her teenage years, Jimena sought out therapy and eventually, support from NAMI. In 2023, Jimena received one-on-one peer support from NAMI staff, and eventually started attending Connections Support Group, a weekly group for adults with a mental health condition. It was here that she found support and a community. “During my time with NAMI, they have helped me so much with my journey of understanding myself and others on mental health. I feel immense support from them. Going to support groups and trainings has increased my awareness about myself and the world regarding how we deal with mental health,” says Jimena. This year, Jimena was trained as a presenter for one of NAMI McHenry County’s newest programs, Ending the Silence. This presentation, designed for middle and high school youth, explains mental health, the warning signs of mental health conditions, and how to get help for yourself or a friend. Jimena is trained to tell her own story at the end of the presentation, giving youth a glimpse into a story of hope and recovery. “It means a lot to be an Ending the Silence presenter at NAMI. It has helped me have a boost of confidence and has helped me develop a passion for educating people on mental health and how that can look through my own story.” When you make a gift to NAMI McHenry County, you fund FREE programs and services to support individuals, families, and the broader community. The individuals who come to NAMI’s Family Support Group and Family to Family classes are from various walks of life: the groups bring together people from across McHenry County, of different ages, races, genders, and life experiences. But through these differences, one commonality brings them together: the desire to learn more about supporting their loved one with a mental health condition. Seven years ago, Gina, Ellen, Kathleen, and Kathy met in a Family to Family class. Their common bond was the foundation for a lifelong friendship that has grown into regular meet-ups and supporting each other in all areas of life, not just NAMI. “Four women, on different journeys of the mental health disorders that became part of our lives. We embrace the lasting bond we have formed through respect, strength, hope, and friendship,” says Kathleen. For these four women, NAMI was the foundational community that has supported them in their most difficult moments, and has given them lifelong friendships and support. When you make a gift to NAMI McHenry County, you fund FREE programs and services to support individuals, families, and the broader community. Your donation helps us grow and sustain our one-on-one support, support groups, classes, and community presentations. During these challenging times, NAMI is proud to be an organization that stands in the gaps and offers free mental health services to everyone in our community. Our new mission is to give our community a safe place to find hope and support on the journey to improve mental health. We are honored to live out this mission each and every day. We are counting on the overwhelming support of our community to ensure the success and expansion of programs like Family Support Group and Family to Family classes.
