On December 4-5, 2023, New Voices NASEM member Dr. Umut A. Gurkan (Cohort 2021-2023) co-organized the workshop “On Leading a Lab: Strengthening Scientific Leadership in Responsible Research.” The event addressed the evolving roles of research leaders, particularly those overseeing cross-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams. Participants engaged in discussions on challenges such as research integrity, data management, open science, mentorship, and technology. As an active lab leader, Dr. Gurkan brought a unique perspective to the workshop, contributing to meaningful conversations about the responsibilities of leading innovative science. New Publication! The #PEER2PEER program is pleased to share the Proceedings in Brief from our recent workshop: Learning Resilience: Lessons for Managing Global Transboundary Water Vulnerabilities 💧 Effective transboundary water cooperation is critical for global security, economic development, and environmental sustainability. This workshop, held on June 24-25, 2024, in Irvine, California, brought together experts to explore innovative water management strategies applicable from local to transnational levels and to build resilience against climate change and other vulnerabilities. For their #ArabAmericanFrontiers Fellowship, Dr. Dinesh Shetty (Khalifa University, UAE) visited Dr. Lei Fang at Texas A&M University to perform research on porous conducting polymers and frameworks for capacitive deionization (CDI)-based desalination.
