"¿Me ves? (Do you see me?) The womb. It is the only value placed on me, as a Latinx foster youth. Often it's 'do you have kids?' not 'what are your passions?' My mother would be ashamed to know I have had an abortion. I wish she could've seen me as a person and not just a woman." Brandy, age 26, uses art to express her emotions and reflect her lived experience. Through NCYL’s Reproductive Health Equity Project for Foster Youth (RHEP), her voice makes transformative impact as she advocates for reproductive rights and access to affirming and safe care that centers young people. Migrant children continue to be denied basic rights and detained in harmful conditions by Customs and Border Protection, despite the agency agreeing 2 years ago to implement several vital reforms. NCYL’s federal filing today, alongside Children's Rights and the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law, aims to extend that 2022 settlement & stop CBP from escaping accountability. CBP has a long history of violating the terms of its 2022 agreement. These include separating youth from their families, denying youth access to phones and counsel, and employing insufficient medical practices that leave children unsafe. "I don't see the sun," one youth told us, describing the distressing environment. "Without the 2022 Settlement in place, including independent monitoring, we have no reason to believe CBP will solve issues like unnecessarily separating children from their families," said NCYL Sr. Immigration Attorney Mishan Wroe. "When the government decides to detain children in border facilities, it has an obligation to limit the lasting harm detention conditions can cause.” Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/giXhXs8S
