About us
Since 1988, the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) has been researching the world’s best-performing education systems to give states and districts the tools they need to become world class. NCEE has been a leader in U.S. education from policy to practice, producing reports that have led to landmark national legislation, supporting states in redesigning their education systems, and providing rigorous, proven supports to more education leaders than any other organization. NCEE’s dedicated, diverse, and experienced staff are working with teachers, school leaders, district leadership teams, and state policy makers to create a new system of education and return the U.S. to the top of the world education ranks.

🌟 From Vision to Action: A middle school #principal turned a fractured system into a cohesive, high-performing team using National Institute for School Leadership strategies. By introducing formative assessments and aligning instructional practices across content, teachers worked collaboratively for the first time. After just one year, the school reported: ✅ Increased teacher collaboration ✅ Clear alignment between curriculum and instruction ✅ Stronger focus on student data Want to replicate this success? Recent findings from the OECD show that literacy and numeracy skills among adults have stagnated—or even declined—across many nations, including the U.S., over the past decade. The opportunity is clear: stronger skills lead to thriving workforces, healthier lives, and a more resilient economy. By championing long-life learning and aligning education with workforce needs, we create an ecosystem where learners of every age can thrive. The UNESCO International Forum on the Futures of Education 2024 in Suwon, Korea 🇰🇷 delivered on so many levels: the people, ideas, and opportunities... here are three of my take-aways: ⭐ this is a #transformation agenda, an important (and distinct) complement to the #acceleration required to meet the #SDGs by 2030 ⭐ building on the "what" spelled out by the International Commission Report "Reimagining our Futures Together", the charge is now "how" to achieve the vision, balancing both #local and #global imperatives ⭐ #Korea is currently rolling out a revolutionary #digital agenda across the system. On our #elementary school site visit our hosts shared the vision and allowed us to tour their #AI lab - while at the same time reassuring us that they had an 80-20 balance, with just 20% of time digital. Looking forward to continuing the conversation, and eager to learn more. This past weekend, in Philadelphia, we laid to rest a giant in public education and a beloved colleague. Greg Thornton came to NCEE after a career devoted to public education, having led Milwaukee Public Schools and Baltimore City Public Schools and served in key leadership positions in Philadelphia, Montgomery County MD, and Winston-Salem Forsyth NC, among others. At NCEE, Dr. Thornton facilitated some of NCEE’s leadership development and system design work. Greg also opened doors and connected NCEE’s work with districts and leaders across the country. If Greg called an influential superintendent, that superintendent, we discovered, always answered Greg’s call. During the pandemic, Greg helped convene an Urban Superintendents Alliance, which included a handful of superintendents who were responsible for the care and education of more than 1 million students and thousands of educators. When asked why he joined the Alliance, one participating superintendent memorably pointed at Greg and said, “Because Dr. Thornton called me. To superintendents of color around the country, he’s the Godfather. We literally call him that. And when the Godfather calls, you answer.” Greg’s relationships with superintendents enabled NCEE to work with districts like Clayton County GA, Racine WI, New Haven CT, and Clark County NV, the fifth largest school district in the United States. Greg was a persistent champion of public education and public school students, particularly students of color. He insisted that NCEE push hard for equitable access to a world class education for all students. To Greg, all truly meant all. He mentored younger colleagues across the nation and helped them land their first superintendencies and leadership positions, and championed them for subsequent positions in larger, more challenging settings as their careers progressed. Greg was the consummate cheerleader and a joyous, uplifting presence in the work. No problem was insurrmoutable, in part because Greg had seen them all, and he brought out the best in those around him trying to address those challenges. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Dr. Thornton will continue to draw from the lessons he taught us and from his example of selfless service for the schoolchildren of this nation.
