National Coffee Association USA reposted this
With all the recent attention the past couple of weeks on spiking coffee commodity prices, it's crucial not to lose sight of other imminent challenges. As NCA members will painfully recall, a strike in early October '24 by U.S. East Coast and Gulf port workers, although brief, was extremely disruptive, affecting 47,000 International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) workers, 36 ports – and yes, coffee imports. Although that strike was called off on October 3, 2024, there remain unresolved issues between ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), primarily concerning port automation, that the parties agreed to address at a later date while work continued under a temporary contract. That temporary contract is due to expire on January 15, 2025, five days before the January 20th inauguration of President Trump. Negotiations intended to address the open issues have now broken off, and the ILA has raised the possibility of another strike. NCA Members should see my National Coffee Association USA emailed Member Alert (December 10th, Re Line "USMX-ILA Negotiations Break Down Over Automation") for further details and assessment, including recent media, comments on the incoming administration's potential policy stance, and NCA's DC outreach.
