About us
Since 1911, the National Council of Teachers of English has been the professional home to English language arts teachers from pre-K through university levels. NCTE has more than 25,000 members and subscribers in the United States and other countries. Individual members are teachers and supervisors of English programs in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, faculty in college and university English departments, teacher educators, local and state agency English specialists, and professionals in related fields. Anyone interested in advancing English language arts education is welcome to join the NCTE membership community.

A new Los Angeles Times story details how coordinated book-banning efforts and vague state laws are effectively limiting which children’s books are taught in the classroom. The in-depth report includes insights from Dr. Ann D David, Chair of NCTE’s Committee Against Censorship, which supports literacy educators whose students are being directly affected by these expanding policies. As Jenny Gold reports, “Librarians and teachers are trained to select materials for certain age groups and curriculum. But in recent years, the process has become fraught with fear and actual risk.” Read the full article to learn more about the far-reaching effects of children’s book bans on students and educators, as well as authors and publishers: https://lnkd.in/d9tW-m_w
As children's book bans soar, sales are down and librarians are afraid. Even in California
