San Diego approves preservation law for subsidized housing, based on NHT's 2020 recommendation, with Councilmembers calling it a "crucial step forward." The new law requires owners of subsidized affordable housing to notify the city and housing developers if they decide to sell, regardless of when rent restrictions expire. Yesterday our CEO Priya Jayachandran spoke alongside DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser, on the operating challenges facing affordable housing providers in Washington, DC. A key challenge is DC’s economic vacancy rate, currently between 15-20%, making it an outlier among peer jurisdictions. In response to advocacy efforts, Mayor Bowser introduced the RENTAL Act, a multi-pronged approach to stabilize the city’s affordable housing ecosystem.   NHT is glad the Mayor is addressing these issues. We look forward to working with our partners and DC Council to preserve our existing affordable housing stock, ensure quality housing for our residents, and create a sustainable environment for the development of new housing. Today, NHT and Piedmont Housing Alliance broke ground on Phase 2 of our Kindlewood redevelopment in City of Charlottesville VA. Phase 2 of this redevelopment will see the replacement of 54 existing rental units as well as 46 additional new homes and a three story community serving commercial building. This groundbreaking marks a milestone in NHT and Piedmont Housing Alliance’s commitment to housing equity and this project would not have been possible without the leadership of the residents. #affordablehousing #equity
