Thanks to Shawn Gremminger for hosting a terrific panel with Sarah Emond, Caroline Pearson, and Nilay Shah on "Unlocking Value: Building Trusted Tools to Assess High-Value Care." Employers have an important role in making the healthcare ecosystem work better for patients. We all agree that we need to help employers find value in medicines, not just rebates. Current value assessment frameworks don’t incorporate everything employers need to do so. As ISPOR Europe 2024 in Barcelona is ending, I am optimistic that our collective research and work will continue to improve health and society. Improving health and society is not easy work and requires additional resources and investment. While here in Barcelona, I was honored to speak at a plenary session about the lessons and implications for market access after the first round of the IRA’s Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program at #AccessEU24 with Inmaculada (Inma) Hernandez, Sean Sullivan, and Indranil Bagchi and share insights on the National Pharmaceutical Council's recent research. The discussions with and inspiration from colleagues at both meetings were memorable and energizing! As I prepare for afternoon discussions on the future of our field with one of NPC's member companies and other thought leaders, I will continue exploring how NPC and others can generate good evidence for good decision making. Thank you, The Galien Foundation, for including me in this year’s celebration of life sciences innovation.   At the Galien Forum, I shared the National Pharmaceutical Council's research findings on a panel with Zeke Emanuel, Ariel Katz, Dan Mendelson, and janet woodcock. Our conversation about the IRA, PBMs, generics, and the impact of the election on the #healthcare industry reminded me we are in the golden age of biopharmaceutical innovation but our healthcare system views the medicines we were celebrating as arbitrage opportunities — threatening patient access to innovative medicines. NPC Senior Fellow Rayan Salih, PharmD and I cheered on the many NPC members nominated for awards. Congratulations to Pfizer who won “Best Pharmaceutical Product” for Paxlovid, and AstraZeneca, who won “Best Biotechnology Product” with Daiichi Sankyo US for Enhertu.   Both the Wednesday night VIP reception and Thursday night Awards Dinner were a who’s who in healthcare innovation and nights I won’t soon forget. It really was like the Oscars for life sciences. Cheers to celebrating an industry worth defending!

Though the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services took important first steps towards facilitating patient engagement in their work to implement the IRA Drug Price Negotiation Program by hosting patient-focused listening sessions, National Pharmaceutical Council's quantitative analysis of these events shows room for improvement. Our analysis, published this week in PharmacoEconomics – Open, underscores some of the shortcomings related to the first 10 patient-focused listening sessions and highlights recommendations to remove barriers and increase meaningful patient engagement. Excited to share that our quantitative review of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services-hosted patient-focused listening sessions for each of the first 10 drugs selected for the IRA’s DPNP was published this week in PharmacoEconomics – Open! Our hope is that this study helps CMS understand that additional clarity in how the input will be used can impact the volume or focus of speaker remarks in future patient engagement events.
