About us
The National Whistleblower Center (NWC), a non-profit, tax-exempt, non-partisan organization, is the leading whistleblower legal advocacy organization with a 35-year history of protecting the right of individuals to report wrongdoing without fear of retaliation. Since 1988, we have provided services and advocacy on behalf of whistleblowers. Currently some of our programs are: Grassroots Advocacy: Through the NWC Action Alert Network, we are improving protections and standing up for the brave individuals who report waste, fraud, and abuse. Sign up to receive periodic updates and calls to action. Follow the NWC on Facebook and Twitter and be the first to get news on the NWC's grassroots campaigns. Legal Advocacy: Attorneys affiliated with the NWC have written and filed numerous Amicus Curiae briefs in precedent-setting cases around the country. Click this link to review the Amicus Curiae briefs submitted on behalf of whistleblowers. Legal Assistance: The National Whistleblower Legal Defense and Education Fund’s (NWLDEF) Whistleblower Legal Assistance Program is very simple—we match whistleblowers with lawyers who are interested in representing whistleblowers. Expanding Whistleblower Rights: The National Whistleblower Center has played a key role in drafting and supporting major whistleblower legislation such as the Dodd-Frank Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act. The NWC is actively involved in opposing efforts to weaken existing laws and pushing for strengthening whistleblowers laws in the area of wildlife whistleblowers, international whistleblowers and pushing for an official National Whistleblower Day.

Giving Tuesday is December 3rd! This year, NWC wants to do something special for whistleblowers, but we need your help. Every year, NWC receives over 3,000 requests for legal help from whistleblowers. For #GivingTuesday, we want to show our appreciation for whistleblowers by sending these individuals free copies of Stephen M. Kohn's "Rules for Whistleblowers" throughout the entire month of December. Donate to NWC's book drive today to share the gift of knowledge this season ➡️ https://ow.ly/UR7z50U5nN0

Illegal shipping pollution harms wildlife, damages ecosystems, deteriorates water quality, and can make seafood unsafe for consumption. One study found 2,400 illegal discharge cases in just a 6 year time span. The real number is likely much higher than this. Illegal shipping pollution is difficult to track and prosecute because much of it happens in international waters, bypassing environmental regulations and official oversight. The Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS) is one of the most important and effective tools to uncover and prevent marine pollution and it includes key whistleblower provisions, including reward payments. #CampaignUpdate We fought for federal agencies to recognize National Whistleblower Day 2024 to hold them accountable as part of our Seven Major Campaigns! We received an outpouring of support in response. 18,000 letters were sent by our supporters to Congress, the White House, and officials. Numerous Federal Agencies reach out to us vowing to recognize the day, share whistleblower training with their employees, and more. On July 31st, the Senate once again Unanimously designated July 30th as National Whistleblower Day. We are still fighting for an Executive Order to establish a permanent National Whistleblower Day. The “Fraud Triangle” is commonly used by anti-fraud professionals to explain the conditions that lead corporations or individuals to commit fraud. 1. Perceived pressure to commit fraud. 2. An opportunity to commit fraud. 3. A way to rationalize the fraud as not being inconsistent with one’s values. Illegal fishing costs the global economy up to $23 Billion USD each year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Illegal fishing hurts fish populations, oftentimes in ways they cannot recover from, and also leaves fish-dependent communities without food security of economic sustenance. Whistleblower reports are key to ending illegal fishing practices. In most cases, the only witnesses to this crime are brave whistleblowers working on cargo ships or in ports of call. #CampaignUpdate In 2024, NWC has been aggressively advocating for the bipartisan Administrative False Claims Act to protect one of America’s most effective whistleblower laws from baseless attacks on its constitutionality. The FCA recovered $70 Billion dollars between 1986 and 2022. Over $49 BILLION dollars of these recovered assets came directly from whistleblowers stepping forward. The FCA is an invaluable tool, and it must be protected! So far, our supporters have sent over 1,000 letters to officials in support of our campaign. Companies that have failed to prepare for the energy transition may feel pressure to meet contradictory goals. Gaps in information and oversight on climate projects and risks allows increasing problem of climate accounting fraud. Climate accounting fraud comes from corporate misconduct like improper asset valuation, failing to record an impairment loss, overstating fossil fuel reserves, fraudulent management estimates and assumptions, auditor misconduct, and more! #CampaignUpdate In 2024, NWC has been aggressively advocating for reforms in the IRS Whistleblower Program to address issues such as decade long case delays and urging for the inclusion of the bipartisan IRS Whistleblower Program Reform Act in the Bipartisan Tax Bill. This campaign is just one of our Seven Major Campaigns of 2024. So far, our supporters have sent over 2,200 letters to officials in support of this critical reform. In April, NWC Executive Director Siri Turner wrote to Senators Grassley and Wyden to raise our concerns over case delays in the IRS Whistleblower Program and the IRS’s rule of partial awards/multiple payments that is a main contributor to these egregious delays. What is a “professional enabler?” Professionals who work in the fossil fuel or timber industries may enable tax fraud and other white collar crime. A lucrative business model focused on meeting clients’ needs can put pressure on even otherwise honest employees to ignore, or even help facilitate, financial fraud.
