We're thrilled to share big news: The National Women’s History Museum (NWHM) has received a $2.5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative. The grant will support the Museum’s forthcoming exhibition, "Faith and Freedom: Women's Social Justice Activism Through the Lens of Spirituality and Religion." The "Faith and Freedom" exhibition will provide a multi-faceted educational and inspirational experience that illuminates the intertwined, complex relationships between faith, ‘feminisms,’ and freedom. Through the exploration of individuals and events from throughout 300 years of history, the exhibition will highlight women from diverse religious backgrounds and their relationships to their faith through activism, from abolitionists and suffragists to reproductive health, education advocates, and more. The exhibition aims to educate, inspire, and empower all visitors to engage with and contribute to contemporary social justice efforts. Through a combination of historical evidence, personal narratives, and interactive elements, the exhibition will foster a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between religion and gender, encouraging visitors to find personal relevance and take meaningful action in their own lives. “We’re deeply honored to have received this grant from Lilly Endowment in support of our forthcoming exhibition, which will highlight the profound impact women of diverse faiths have had in shaping social justice movements throughout history,” says Lori Ann Terjesen, Ph.D., NWHM’s vice president of education. “This project will offer visitors an inspiring exploration of courage, conviction, and collaboration rooted in spirituality and community, encouraging all to reflect on the powerful interplay of faith and activism in building a more just world.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekcg_uSi Sign-up for updates about this forthcoming exhibition: https://lnkd.in/eu-nDXKK #faithandfreedom #womenshistory

We’re thrilled to announce that Mattel, Inc. will receive our inaugural Evelyn Y. Davis Corporate Changemaker Award at our Women Making History Awards Gala in Washington, DC on March 20, 2025. Mattel is being honored with this first-ever corporate award, recognizing the societal impact of its brands like Barbie on generations of girls, and its purpose to empower all to explore the wonder of childhood and reach their full potential. Accepting the award on the company’s behalf will be Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and chief brand officer of Mattel. “It is an incredible honor for Mattel to be recognized with the inaugural Evelyn Y. Davis Corporate Changemaker Award,” said McKnight. “This award reflects Mattel’s commitment to our purpose, the impact of initiatives like the Barbie Dream Gap Project, and how our brands like Barbie, Monster High and American Girl allow generations of children everywhere to see themselves in our products, content, and experiences.” “Mattel is a trailblazer in challenging stereotypes and advancing gender equity through the power of play and storytelling,” added NWHM Board Chair Susan D Whiting. “Mattel has shown an unwavering commitment to empowering girls to see themselves as limitless, capable and powerful.” The Women Making History Awards Gala will celebrate extraordinary trailblazing women, such as those previously honored like Rita Moreno, Maya Angelou and Katherine Johnson—all of whom have also been celebrated by Barbie with dolls made in their likeness—who have made profound contributions and inspire the next generation of leaders, change agents, and history makers. By honoring companies like Mattel, NWHM hopes to encourage more brands to take meaningful action to advance gender equity and representation, creating a lasting impact for future generations.
