On this day, in 1906, Esther Peterson was born! Esther Peterson, as head of the Commission on the Status of Women, was the most powerful woman in the Kennedy administration. Peterson fought for women’s rights and for improvements in working women’s conditions, leading to her, in 1981, being awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Carter. On this day, Josephine Roche was born in 1886! Josephine Roche, after gaining control of her late father’s Colorado coal mine operation in 1927, invited the United Mine Workers to organize workers and get contracts. Roche also supervised the Public Health Service as part of FDR’s administration and made recommendations for 1935 Social Security. Along those accomplishments, Josephine Roche tried to encourage universal health coverage and was named one of 10 outstanding women in the U.S. in 1936. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American congresswoman from 1969-1983 for New York, as well as the first woman and first African-American Democratic presidential nominee.
