Despite multiple years of back-to-back hurricanes wrecking havok on the small island of Cedar Key, FL, hundreds of proud clam farmers in that working waterfront community continue to produce delicious, healthy and sustainable clams. The clam farmers in Cedar Key support over 500 local jobs and provide an estimated $45 million a year into the area’s economy! NAA is pleased to release an infographic sharing the results of a recent economic analysis conducted by an expert team of aquaculture economists. U.S. aquaculture farms have a $4 billion direct economic impact to the U.S. economy, provide over 22,000 jobs and benefit 96% of other economic sectors! The study also estimated that U.S. aquaculture farm's total economic impact is 3-4x higher than their direct revenue. U.S. farm-raised seafood and products are a win-win for the environment and the economy. US aquaculture sales soar, driven by a boom in mollusks and crustaceans. US seafood farmers generated an impressive $1.57 billion in sales in 2023, marking a 38% jump from $1.13 billion in 2018 when the Census of Aquaculture was last conducted. Mollusks were a standout, with sales surging 75%, led by oysters and other shellfish, while crustacean sales skyrocketed 107% to $175.7 million, driven by crawfish and shrimp production.
