  • The first week of February is #BurnAwarenessWeek, a time to raise awareness about burn injuries and recovery. Four years ago, Taylor’s life changed when an accident left her with second- and third-degree burns covering 25% of her body. In shock, shaking, and in pain, Taylor was life-flighted to The Burn Center at Nationwide Children's. Upon her arrival, doctors placed her in a medically induced coma for three days to allow her body time to recover. Taylor spent a week in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit before transitioning to the Burn Unit, where she received nutrition through a feeding tube and bi-weekly dressing changes. On her journey to recovery, Taylor underwent multiple surgeries. One of the most significant was a skin graft. In previous surgeries, doctors had placed donor skin on her burns, which was effective but did not completely heal her skin. To address this, surgeons performed a grafting procedure using skin from Taylor’s right thigh, a procedure that remains a vivid memory for her. After 29 days in the hospital, Taylor was discharged. The staff in the Burn Unit trained her mother to perform at-home dressing changes and helped Taylor regain her independence, encouraging her to do things on her own instead of relying on others. Reflecting on her experience, Taylor says, “Thanks to the amazing staff, I was able to have the best healing process. It was not easy, but they always assured me that I would be able to get through it.” Today, Taylor is a confident and healthy 18-year-old. This past summer, she attended a camp for burn survivors in Colorado, where she was invited to share her story. Grateful for the support she received from her family, friends, and the hospital staff, Taylor is committed to giving back. She enjoys volunteering and using her experiences to help other burn survivors. She currently attends a trade school program through Health Career Academy and dreams of one day working at Nationwide Children’s as a burn nurse! • As we recognize Heart Month, get to know Erika, an RN within the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. She shared, "It is truly an honor to care for patients post-operatively following open heart surgery. Having such a pivotal role in these heart warriors' lives by watching them grow, get strong, and be able to go home has become a passion of mine."
