More background on the issue that is taking place in Aotearoa and a little helpful breakdown on why the haka was chanted in the New Zealand Parliament.

If you saw the clip of this haka, but didn’t understand the context, this is the best explainer I’ve seen. Thank you Riana Te Ngahue for your brilliance 👌🏽

∆∆∆∆ Exciting Announcement from Native Roots Network! ∆∆∆∆ We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Indigenous Community Changemaker Apprenticeship Program (ICCAP)! This program exemplifies our commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders within Indigenous communities, focusing on environmental sustainability, community organizing, and the revitalization of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (T.E.K.). Today, we extend the warmest welcome to our first apprentice, Juventino Lievsay (Pit River/Wintu). Juventino has begun his journey with us to become a skilled community organizer and facilitator. He will be involved in the development of the Native Roots Network's T.E.K. land restoration team and will play an important role in deploying NRN's "Acornomic" community development framework. This innovative model is rooted in Indigenous values, emphasizing a solidarity economy that supports our communities from the ground up. Juventino's passion, dedication, and eagerness to learn and contribute make him an awesome addition to Native Roots Network. His journey with us will involve hands-on experience, significant learning opportunities, and the chance to make a profound impact on the sustainability and enrichment of Native communities in his home territory. Please join us in welcoming Juventino to the Native Roots Network family. We look forward to the incredible work we will accomplish together, and the positive changes that Juventino's involvement will bring to our communities. #IndigenousCommunity #Changemaker #Apprenticeship #TEK #SolidarityEconomy

Our work is community based and traditional Indigenous values centered. We often use our other social media channels to share images from the cultural gatherings, events and ceremonies of which we are honored to be included. So it is a little different, but seemingly important, to share a little of what we experienced this weekend. The Modoc Ancestral Run was held once again. The two day run, covering over 80 miles of Modoc ancestral territory, is a community driven effort to address the historical trauma, removal, and dispossession of Modoc People as a result of violent colonial settler history. We have been participating in this run for the past nine years. This run, and other ceremonial based relay runs like it, serve an important role in bringing people together and building community. For Native Roots it is an opportunity for us to be in relationship with these healing movements, be guided by community and recalibrate our own compass as we continue our work, creating the path as we walk it. At night, around the campfire, the real work of what we are about was underway.

We are still feeling charged up upon returning from the 2024 Tribal Summit on Sierra Nevada Indigenous Guardianship where we were able to meet with and learn from many other Indigenous people working to secure, rematriate, and take care of ancestral territories. The reintroduction of cultural burning was a big topic that was repeatedly discussed. We also really appreciated hearing about the formation and growing work of tribal land restoration crews, many of whom are working with young people - a similar plan that we are developing for our area. We also had the opportunity to present and share our “Acornomic” cultural value centered development framework, network with potential partners, a see little bit of the beautiful lands of the Miwok People. We look forward to growing our Network of friends, teachers, and partners.

We really appreciate the research and actions of tribes such as Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians and the Puyallup Tribe as they take steps to decarbonize their electricity supply while also considering damage done by lithium mining. Are these the viable solution for static energy storage?

Last night members of the NRN circle came back from a coming of age ceremony for one of our community’s young women. It was powerful to hear the women speak of how this ceremony is being brought back for the current generation after several generations were denied the opportunity. After months of preparation, the final steps of the ceremony took place over a few days. Through the final night, an all night set of ceremony and dances, the young lady crossed over the threshold into womanhood. The love, the humor, the strength, and the belief of the people present demonstrated, once again, that at our core, we have what we need to build the world we need, and heart to be able to do it together. This is our guidestar. This is our anchor and foundation.

This past week Native Roots had the opportunity to attend the Intertribal Agriculture Council’s Pacific Californial Regional Summit.(https://lnkd.in/geF8Fhrz) It was great to learn about the work that is taking place throughout Native communities maintaining or establishing traditional practices of food production and land caretaking, stretching and broadening the definitions and conventional understandings “agriculture”. Some of the practices highlighted included acorn, choke-cherry and other traditional foods preparation and production. Discussions also illuminated many ways Native Peoples cultivate landscapes for abundance- including, cultural burns pruning, gathering and other methods. We are especially interested in these topics as we continue develop and prepare to launch our "Acornomics" Development framework.
