Months after the Naval War College Museum extracted a 1924 time capsule from under the Settlers Stone on Naval Station Newport, the contents were revealed today at the Newport Public Library. After painstakingly opening the capsule, sealed with a strong wax liner, Collections Specialist Maria Vazquez described each item as she pulled them from the container. Included in the capsule were: • A blueprint of Naval Station Newport • Coins and stamps from the era • Sawdust from a timber of Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship, USS Lawrence • Bulletins from the Newport Historical Society • A piece of the first commercial airplane servicing the New York-Newport route in 1923 • Photographs, including one of Theodore Roosevelt visiting the naval station and another showcasing the naval station from USS Shenandoah and the first successful Zeppelin of the United States. The Naval War College Museum plans to meticulously document and conserve the time capsule's contents before putting them on display for the public. You can explore other items in the U.S. Naval War College Archives online at usnwcarchives.org. #NWCMuseum #USNavalWarCollege #maritimehistory #preservation #conservation

The Naval War College Foundation (NWCF) was deeply saddened by yesterday’s passing of ADM James R. Hogg, USN (Ret.). A life member of the Foundation and a Senior Advisor to the staff, ADM Hogg dedicated his illustrious career to the service of our great Nation. Over 35 years of active duty, his sea commands included a guided-missile cruiser, two destroyer squadrons, and a cruiser-destroyer flotilla. He commanded the U.S. Seventh Fleet from May 1983 to March 1985. His staff service included assignments as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel, Director of Military Personnel Policy, and Director of Naval Warfare, where he worked in the areas of military requirements and acquisition. ADM Hogg was a great leader, warfighter, scholar, and mentor, and his impact on the campus of the U.S. Naval War College will never be forgotten.
