Ahead of the UN's High-Level Meeting on #NCDs in September, we're preparing a Position Statement to provide guidance and recommendations for the inclusion of vulnerable populations – especially children and people living in poverty – in the global NCD agenda. A comment period for the position statement is open through Feb. 5. Links in the article. Please take a look and join the conversation in this vital year to #ActOnNCDs. #GlobalHealth #Diabetes #HeartDisease #ChildHealth

Bridging a gap in universal health coverage for the poorest billion
About us
Each year, severe, chronic noncommunicable diseases kill more than 560,000 of the world’s poorest children and young adults, most of whom live in rural sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Just four conditions—type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease, and rheumatic and congenital heart disease—account for as many as 100,000 of those avoidable deaths. The NCDI Poverty Network—composed of 22 national commissions as well as international funding, advocacy, policy, and technical partners—uses the PEN-Plus model to provide treatment to people living with these diseases in settings of poverty. All 47 nations of the WHO African Region have now adopted this proven strategy to save those precious lives.

Our global coalition of partners has a three-year strategic plan that sets lofty goals, including expanding the total catchment area for PEN-Plus clinical services to 51 million people in lower-income countries. But in order to achieve universal access to care for children and young adults with severe noncommunicable diseases (#NCDs), "lofty" must become "reality" -- and we'll get there together, one hospital, one clinic, and one patient at a time. This is our shared promise to confront the rising epidemic of NCDs.

PEN-Plus is the foundation of our work to integrate care for severe, chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) into health systems in lower-income countries. Bringing care closer to people in rural areas and connecting the dots between health centers and hospitals are essential elements of PEN-Plus that create healthier communities. We're excited and proud to support expansion of PEN-Plus across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia in 2025. #NCDs #GlobalHealth

Interested in how we're driving dramatic, sustainable change in health systems around the world? Our “Springboard for Action” Strategic Plan 2025-2028 describes the skyrocketing momentum in care for severe, chronic, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) across sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia. The strategic plan details the PEN-Plus model of care delivery and shows how PEN-Plus is changing thousands of lives through collaboration with patients, communities, national governments, clinical experts and leading hospitals, and local and global funders. As we prepare for the next UN General Assembly, which will feature High-Level Meetings on NCDs in September 2025, we begin the year with excitement and energy for the task ahead. Check out this article for our plan's executive summary, link to view the full strategic plan, and join us on this journey to dramatically expand global health equity, build healthy communities, and change lives in the poorest regions of the world.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries cause nearly 800,000 deaths per year among people younger than 40 in low-income settings. As we prepare for a huge year of NCD advocacy in 2025, this UNICEF report on our strategic Childhood NCD Learning Workshop last summer in Kathmandu sets the tone: "By integrating NCD prevention and care into primary #HealthCare, we can create a more holistic and accessible health system for children and adolescents." Integrating care for #NCDs is a critical step for saving children's lives and advancing #HealthEquity, and we were proud to partner in this workshop with UNICEF's Regional Office of South Asia. https://lnkd.in/gvmk9bzG
