NC State University Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center — The life force of tomorrow's industry
About us
NC State BTEC (Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry and create the best-trained, most industry-focused workforce possible. Founded to help establish, attract and expand biomanufacturing in North Carolina and thus drive innovation and job creation, NC State BTEC operates under the auspices of North Carolina State University's College of Engineering (COE). It operates two facilities on NC State University Centennial Campus: the 82,500-gross-square-foot main building and the 5,000-gross-square-foot BTEC Annex in the Keystone Science Center. The two facilities feature more than $12.5 million of industry-standard equipment and a simulated cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) pilot plant facility capable of producing biopharmaceutical products using cell growth and expression, recovery, and purification processes using aseptic practices. Undergraduates, graduate students, and working professionals come to NC State BTEC for hands-on learning with the latest biomanufacturing technologies. The organization also performs process development, scale-up, and equipment evaluation studies under a variety of contracts.

The Accelerated Innovation in Manufacturing Biologics (AIM-Bio) program celebrated its 5th annual symposium at NC State University on November 18-19, 2024❗ The meeting was attended by over 80 people in industry and academia from the United States and Europe. Funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, AIM-Bio is a $27 million collaboration between North Carolina State University and the DTU - Technical University of Denmark to improve human health through biologics. The AIM-Bio Program includes both research and education programs. The AIM-Bio Symposium included guest speakers who delivered complementary talks about workforce development, research translation, sustainability, digital transformation, innovation, economic development and federal initiatives to strengthen the U.S. bioeconomy. The distinguished speakers included John Balchunas, Bill Bullock, Mike Hourigan, Raj Narayan, Michael Phillips, Kelley Conner Rogers and David Roush. The meeting also included research and education talks by AIM-Bio collaborators and tours at Grifols, Merck, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies and NC State BTEC. The meeting provided an opportunity for the group to network, share program accomplishments and expand knowledge in the field of biomanufacturing❗ #AIMBio DTU Biotech Lifelong Learning

Reid Kirlin recently earned the Professional Certificate in #Biomanufacturing Science from BTEC❗Reid completed 3 short courses at BTEC - Fermentation Engineering, Hands-On cGMP Biomanufacturing Operations, and Microbial Contamination Control in #Bioprocessing Operations. When Reid was asked how he will take what he learned at BTEC and apply this in his career, he responded, "Having a strong fundamental understanding of upstream, downstream, and analytical aspects of biomanufacturing will really help with anchoring effective processes in regards to contamination control and equipment/process reliability. The industry seems to keep growing in every direction, so I feel this knowledge will be necessary to the future successes of both the operation and my career." We also asked Reid about his favorite lab activity, to which he replied, "The lab activity I enjoyed the most was P&ID tracing and assessment of the CIP system and disc stack centrifuge. I also enjoyed the gram staining since I hadn’t done it for about 7 years, so it was a nice trip down memory lane to my college days." Way to go Reid! 🎉
