  • The Michigan Association for Healthcare Quality partnered with Julie Janeway, MSA, JD and Linda Weirauch, MSN, RN, CPHQ to present a webinar titled Just Clone Me! Unbundling Conflicting Compliance, Risk, and Quality Roles Held by One Leader The initial premise of this caught my attention, having worked in smaller hospitals, requiring me to wear multiple hats to include compliance, patient relations, credentialing, quality/PI to name a few.  I’m sure many of my fellow attendees have shared similar experiences.  There is so much overlap in all these areas, on it’s face, it *feels* like it makes sense to combine these roles.  However, Ms. Janeway focused on regulatory changes from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) presented in November of 2023 that focused on the necessity of a Compliance Officer that is its own entity.  In addition, the case was made for having separate roles for Risk Management, Quality, Patient Safety, Infection Control, Legal and Compliance. Each function was noted have their own unique requirements to be met and different frameworks for carrying out their functions.  In many cases, the unique needs of each function may actually conflict with the separate needs of another function and bundling the responsibilities for these roles can have the opposite effect of increasing efficiency.  The key to unbundling these functions is close collaboration.  Communication and collaboration amongst these various roles are at the very heart of achieving overall organizational goals while maintaining the objectivity, independence and integrity of each individual function.  This was a thought-provoking presentation offering excellent reasons to support the unbundling of these roles as well as some clear recommendations in managing such and undertaking.  Those recommendations include: - Ensuring clear role separation - Fostering Collaborative Communication - Provision of adequate resources - Implement Oversight Mechanisms - Promoting a Culture of Excellence Together, these recommendations and unbundling will result in a highly structured and aligned organization well positioned to meet the unique goals of the function while supporting the overall organizational aspirations.

  • Our board member, Lynn Myers, recently attended an engaging webinar presented by the Ohio Association for Healthcare Quality, part of the Healthcare Quality Collective. The webinar was presented by Scott J. Allen, Ph.D, the Robert M. Ginn Institute Professor for Leadership & Social Responsibility at John Carroll University. The topic was Online Presentations by Design. In today's digital age, the ability to deliver an effective online presentation is a crucial skill. Dr. Allen noted that first impressions are formed within milliseconds. He shared ideas for optimizing your setting and technology, delivery, content, and slide design to become an impactful speaker who really connects with the audience. Dr. Allen was the perfect demonstration of his techniques; his presentation was captivating! Thank you to Dr. Allen and thank you to our healthcare quality collective partner, OAHQ, for hosting this absorbing event. #healthcarequality Did you know that if you become an NEAHQ member, you can access up to 28 webinars annually at no additional cost? • NEAHQ had the great pleasure of hosting Susanne Meninger of Tufts Medical Center in today’s webinar: Organizational Justice and Performance Improvement. Susanne Meninger, MS, RN, CPPS, CIC, has broad competency in Human Factors, Information technology, Teamwork, Patient Safety, Evidence-Based Management, Behavior Change and Creative Writing. She currently works in Infection Prevention and Quality & Patient Safety. Organizational justice is a fundamental concept that underpins the relationship between an organization and its employees. Organizational justice and performance improvement go hand in hand, as employees who perceive their work environment to be fair are more likely to be productive and engaged. Organizational justice comprises three types: distributive justice, procedural justice, and interactional justice. Distributive justice refers to fairness in the distribution of rewards and outcomes. In an organizational setting, rewards are given to employees based on factors such as job performance, job title, or seniority. To improve employee performance through distributive justice, organizations must maintain a clear performance evaluation system that is unbiased, transparent, and based on merit. Procedural justice refers to fairness in the processes used to distribute rewards and outcomes. Organizations that emphasize procedural justice in their decision-making processes are more likely to have motivated and committed employees. Employees feel more motivated and committed to an organization when they are treated with respect and dignity. Organizations that prioritize interactional justice by ensuring that all employees are treated with respect and dignity create a positive work environment that makes employees feel valued. Interactional justice refers to fairness in interpersonal relationships. Employees feel more motivated and committed to an organization when they are treated with respect and dignity. Organizations that prioritize interactional justice by ensuring that all employees are treated with respect and dignity create a positive work environment that makes employees feel valued. Organizational justice has a positive impact on employee performance. Employees who perceive their work environment to be fair are motivated to work harder to achieve the organization's goals. Such employees are more likely to have a positive attitude towards their work and maintain high levels of productivity. Organizational justice is a key driver of performance improvement in an organization. By prioritizing organizational justice, organizations can create a positive impact on employee performance, productivity, and ultimately, organizational success. We want to express gratitude to Susanne for putting together an excellent webinar for the NEAHQ and Collective audience! 🏥💡 Exploring the Intersection of Public Reporting, Pay for Performance, and Hospital Rankings 💡🏥 NEAHQ had the distinct pleasure of hosting Dr. Michael Calderwood of Dartmouth Health in yesterday’s webinar: Public Reporting, Pay for Performance, and Hospital Rankings. Dr. Calderwood is the Chief Quality Officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In the webinar he summarized the evolution of hospital performance evaluation from process to outcomes-based metrics and the implications such a system has on patients, providers, and healthcare overall. _____________ Public reporting empowers patients by providing access to vital information about healthcare providers' performance metrics, such as infection rates, readmission rates, and patient satisfaction scores. This transparency fosters informed decision-making and encourages providers to strive for excellence in care delivery. Pay for performance initiatives incentivize hospitals and healthcare professionals to achieve specific quality targets or outcomes by linking financial rewards to performance metrics. By aligning incentives with desired outcomes, pay for performance models promote efficiency, quality improvement, and patient-centered care. Hospital rankings, whether through independent assessments or consumer-driven platforms, serve as valuable tools for patients seeking high-quality care. These rankings consider various factors, including clinical outcomes, patient experience, and safety measures, to assess hospitals' overall performance and guide patients in selecting healthcare providers. However, while these initiatives aim to drive positive change in healthcare delivery, they also pose challenges. Concerns regarding data accuracy, risk adjustment methodologies, and unintended consequences, such as gaming the system or neglecting non-measured aspects of care, underscore the complexity of implementing these strategies effectively. As stakeholders continue to navigate the intricacies of public reporting, pay for performance, and hospital rankings, collaboration and innovation are essential. By leveraging technology, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and prioritizing patient-centered care, we can harness the power of these initiatives to enhance healthcare quality and outcomes for all. We want to express gratitude to Dr. Calderwood for putting together an excellent webinar for the NEAHQ and Collective audience! • 🌟 Celebrating Women's History Month: Honoring Women in Healthcare 🌟 As we commemorate Women's History Month, it's essential to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions of women in healthcare. From pioneering research to compassionate patient care, women have played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of healthcare and improving outcomes for individuals worldwide. Throughout history, women have defied expectations, shattered glass ceilings, and blazed trails in every facet of healthcare. Their dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to healing have left an indelible mark on the industry and inspired generations to come. Today, we celebrate the women who have fearlessly pursued careers in medicine, nursing, research, public health, and beyond. Their leadership, expertise, and empathy have transformed the way we approach healthcare and have helped bridge gaps in access and equity. As we reflect on the progress we've made, let's also acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. Women continue to face challenges in healthcare, from gender disparities in leadership roles to inequities in access to care. It's crucial that we continue to advocate for gender equality and create environments where all women can thrive and make their voices heard. This Women's History Month, let's honor the trailblazers, the caregivers, the innovators, and the advocates who have shaped the past, present, and future of healthcare. Together, let's strive for a future where every woman has the opportunity to contribute her talents and expertise to building a healthier, more equitable world. #WomensHistoryMonth #WomenInHealthcare #HealthcareLeadership #CelebrateWomen
