The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed a rule last week that would close a loophole that allows banks to charge excessive overdraft fees. "Approximately 23 million households pay overdraft fees in any given year. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates that this rule may save consumers $3.5 billion or more in fees per year. The potential savings would translate to $150 for households that pay overdraft fees." Around 65% of our new members in the NRC WORKS program have been charged overdraft fees in last six months leading up to their first coaching session. 25% have charged off accounts as a result of overdraft fees that they were unable to pay. We believe this ruling will help many consumers get back on track faster. Thanks to CFPB for proposing it!
