Pioneering innovative solutions for decarbonising highways maintenance in Somerset, Cornwall and Hampshire.
About us
The Net Zero Corridors Live Lab will pioneer the UK’s first net zero emission roads in Somerset, Cornwall and Hampshire in nine ‘Net Zero Corridors’, which could transform the way we maintain our roads network, user cleaner, greener methods and materials. Live Labs 2 is a three-year, £30million, UK-wide programme funded by the Department for Transport that will run until March 2026, with a five-year subsequent, extended monitoring and evaluation period. Seven projects, grouped by four interconnected themes, are being led by local authorities working alongside commercial and academic partners. The diverse networks of the Wessex authorities (including geographies, contracting models and material access) will ensure findings are representative of highway maintenance on each local authority road ecosystem. Using an iterative process, we will progressively decarbonise maintenance across the whole asset lifecycle. Corridors will be a test bed for innovation, circular solutions and new ways of thinking. Our approach will be underpinned by the Doughnut Economics Model, a framework that balances environmental and social needs to ensure wider impacts (such as on levelling up) are understood. Our consortium of partners will be open and collaborative, enabling the transformation of services on roads and other sectors globally.

A unique event hosted by Somerset Council and Kier Transportation took place last month. Organisations and transport experts from across the country joined forces with the aim to decarbonise fleet operations. It was rare, we were there. Kier Group
We recently co-hosted an event with Somerset Council to explore ways to decarbonise fleet operations – which was joined by over 70 highways and transport experts, all on this same mission. From blue light services, to freight organisations - we were united in our efforts to drive down our carbon emissions and explore infrastructure options, to unlock benefits for fleet operators across the region. 🚚 Attendees discussed a range of case studies of cutting-edge transport decarbonisation technologies. We shared our research, and invited voices from across the industry including WSP, MHTech and Gregory Group. The group shared thoughts on commercial and logistical barriers to decarbonisation, and ideas for how to overcome them through effective collaborations, more sustainable energy provision and fleet advancements. Our next steps will be to host working groups to see how we can take some of this valuable insight further. Watch the video below to hear what they thought about the event! 👇 #sustainability #fuels #infrastructure #transport #carbon #decarbonise

Really interesting eco-friendly alternative to lighting for cycle paths! 👇
Who or what has left it's mark in Everton Park? Luminokrom has landed to light the way! This innovative paint solution has been laid to improve cycle paths after dark as an alternative light source. If Luminokrom can demonstrate sufficient lighting in the hours of darkness throughout the park, there is the potential for 2.13t CO2e (46%) saving from traditional street lighting. This is just one of the innovative technologies being tested in Liverpool as part of the larger UK-wide £30 million programme – ADEPT #LiveLabs – funded by the Department of Transport #DfT. We’ll be monitoring the scheme's success over the coming weeks working with colleagues in Parks and School Safety to evaluate changes in lighting and behaviour before assessing how to roll out further. And those bird feet? Look out for these across our Live Lab 2 sites to ‘highlight’ where change is taking place to #decarbonise our highways. #decarbonisation #netzero

Wessex Live Labs are trialling a fantastic new technology, an electric road gritter. The new eco-friendly, zero-emission e-gritter was welcomed to Hampshire County Council’s winter fleet. This is just one of the innovative technologies being testing as part of the larger UK-wide £30 million programme – ADEPT #LiveLabs2 – funded by the Department of Transport #DfT. Somerset Council is working with Cornwall Council and Hampshire County Council to reduce carbon emissions from activities related to the repair and maintenance of local roads. #eco-friendly #sustainableroads #sustainability #netzeroroads #electricvechiles #electricgritter #roadgritters
We’ve welcomed an all-electric gritter to our winter fleet. The eco-friendly, zero-emission machine is being trialled over the colder months on the A30 in the Cadnam and Netley Marsh area to see how well it performs. Following a two-hour charge, the vehicle can run for up to 170 miles, and when the temperatures rise, the gritting unit can also be replaced with a tipper to enable its use on other jobs including pothole repairs. This is just one of the innovative technologies being testing at three sites in Hampshire, part of a larger UK-wide £30 million programme – ADEPT #LiveLabs2 – funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom The programme aims to reduce carbon emissions from activities related to the repair and maintenance of local roads. Hampshire County Council is working with Somerset Council and Cornwall Council to deploy a range of low carbon materials and processes on both rural and urban roads, with the goal of creating a net zero blueprint for all local authorities to use in the future. Alongside the e-gritter, we are using low carbon construction materials and recycled asphalt extracted from road repairs to make new road surfaces. We’ve also recently deployed a ‘Hydrohog’, a road repair machine that uses hydrogen instead of diesel. The three Hampshire pilot sites are: • A30 Hook to the Surrey boundary • A336 Cadnam to Netley Marsh • A32 Droxford to Filmore Hill Net Zero Roads - Wessex Live Lab
