Thanksgiving week is an excellent time to express gratitude for the level of professional and industry support of the MCC optics (#mccoptics) program. This week, students in the Optical Instrumentation and Testing course were fortunate to host two special guest speakers in optical design and digital microscopy. Our sincerest thanks to Christopher Cotton and Will Darcy for sharing their experience and insights in these areas of optical science technology.

I have been fortunate to visit labs across the country while on the road with the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab. I’ve seen exquisite research facilities, clever part assemblies, and might have even noted who could use a reminder about using washers with their cap screws… 🙂 But what I saw in Thayaparan Paramanathan’s lab at Bridgewater State University really struck me, and it was not something that required multiple R01s or a center grant to achieve. What I saw was acknowledgment. Along the side of the optical table is a series of plates, each containing the name, project, and year(s) a student worked at the table. Along the frame above the table are plates with students’ names for awarded grants. And along the wall are school pennants that students placed with their families when they were accepted into grad school. My immediate reaction was to think about who might have worked at the same optical tables I did over the years and how cool it would have been to be able to picture myself in the shoes of some of the pillars of the field who worked in the same spot late into the night. The longer-term reaction was an appreciation for an advisor making a point to celebrate their students. I was extremely fortunate to have a similar advisor in Charles DiMarzio, who always gave his students full credit for his own achievements. It was great to see another advisor making similar efforts to build up their students as much as their own research programs. Seeing the lab was a much needed reminder that with mentorship comes a greater responsibility than reaching milestones and creating more hands to achieve greater success. And it’s something I need to make a point to work on since it’s so easy to run to the next fire without appreciating the efforts required to put out the last. Well done Thayaparan Paramanathan please continue to inspire and build a legacy of support, encouragement, and acknowledgement for the future generations of scientists and engineers.
