The Oscar and Golden-globe winning The Brutalist tells the story of how trauma and the immigrant experience can haunt people throughout their lives. It also reveals the story of how modern architecture came about and how this immigrant experience directly connects to why so many of us live in blank, ugly, soul-crushing urban landscapes. https://lnkd.in/gPvegCrF

The following "built for night" projects run the full spectrum: from bold, high-impact façades to restrained, methodically lit landmarks. Together, they prove that once the sun sets, architecture need not vanish into anonymity. And sometimes, as Times Square first taught us, light can be the making of entire destinations. 😎 https://lnkd.in/egrn4V5E

A new study led by the University of Michigan reveals that while rideshare services like Uber and Lyft offer convenience, most trips they serve could be handled by public transit ... ... if transit were more accessible. https://lnkd.in/eJkmGKcB

"Zombie" foreclosures are popping up across the U.S. as homeowners struggle to make monthly mortgage payments—with rates still hovering close to 7%. There are at least 1.4 million vacant residential properties across the country, according to ATTOM Data Solutions. This represents 1 in 76 homes across the nation—and the number is up slightly from a year ago. https://lnkd.in/eXf7GaZH

Metrics have been used for years by NIMBYs, YIMBYs, municipalities, and numerous other housing-focused groups to fight for their desired outcomes. But most metrics that are employed are seriously flawed, because they tell us little about either the quality of existing places or the quality of developments proposed to replace them. However some metrics actually can tell us quite a lot about the quality of the place they are measuring. Steve Mouzon offers a dozen of those metrics, one for each foundation of the Original Green. https://lnkd.in/eYeybnWd

A former railway track in Montreal has a new life as a public park, thanks to a decade of community lobbying. Gorilla Park, located in the city’s Mile-Ex neighborhood and inaugurated in the fall, is replete with what are called mini-forests – the dense planting of native plant species that encourages quick growth – as well as a large wooden deck and smaller structure for cultural and community events. 😎 https://lnkd.in/eXTzkF58

The A-frame has long been associated with cabins and alpine retreats, its steeply pitched roof designed for shedding snow and maximizing loft space. Here's a collection that shows how the familiar architectural form can be pushed in unexpected directions, adapting to new contexts while maintaining its distinctive character. https://lnkd.in/g2gtUybY

Compared to third quarter of 2024, supply increased by 5.4% in the fourth quarter of last year. The loosened New Home Lot Supply Index (LSI)—although tightened year-over-year—is welcomed change as growth of lots and starts keep steady. https://lnkd.in/ge8iqWGa

The Northeast and California lead the way, with Connecticut seeing the most buyer activity, followed by New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. California remains active as well, despite its high cost of living, with cities such as San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland among the hottest markets. https://lnkd.in/gVmhcCkh
