ECECD’s aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico.
About us
The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department's aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from 0-5 and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access services they need. In 2019, Gov. Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Legislature created the Early Childhood Education and Care Department. The Department officially launched on July 1, 2020. The Department’s aim is to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in New Mexico. That means coordinating a continuum of programs from prenatal to five—and ensuring that families in every corner of the state can access the services they need. This work is informed by New Mexico’s Birth-Five Needs Assessment (Spanish version here) and the related Native American Perspectives report, which include feedback from thousands of New Mexicans. The Department also oversees child care programs—as well as food and nutrition programs—that serve older children and families. • VISION: All New Mexico families and young children are thriving • MISSION: Optimize the health, development, education, and well-being of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers through a family-driven, equitable, community-based system of high-quality prenatal and early childhood programs and services

This Native American History Month, ECECD is highlighting the vital work being done in partnership with Tribal communities to preserve language, culture, and a way of life for future generations. The Pueblo of Jemez is leading the way in preserving the language and cultural heritage of their people. In collaboration with ECECD, they’ve been expanding language immersion programs to promote fluency in their native language. In FY24, these efforts were strengthened as the community collaborated with other Tribal leaders, shared educational materials, and welcomed delegation visits. By integrating language immersion into early childhood education, traditions are being preserved for generations to come. At ECECD, the approach goes beyond serving communities—it involves listening to them. Through the New Mexico Early Childhood Tribal Advisory Committee (NMECTAC), this year has been spent actively engaging with Tribal leaders, educators, and families to better understand their unique challenges and strengths. From addressing barriers in early childhood education to providing culturally relevant professional development, these efforts are empowering Tribal communities to take charge of their future. This Native American History Month, we are grateful for these partnerships and look forward to continuing this vital work.
