📖 What We’re Reading: European Defense Tech Start-Ups This week, we’re diving into a McKinsey article that explores the rapidly expanding European defense tech start-up ecosystem, and it’s packed with insights that could shape the future of dual-use defense technologies. As we discuss around the water cooler, it’s clear that the European market is still catching up to the US in terms of funding and maturity, but it’s moving fast and offers some unique opportunities for US-based investors. Here are the highlights from our discussion: 🇪🇺 European Defense Tech on the Rise: Investment in European defense tech start-ups grew by 500% from 2021 to 2024. The growth in early-stage funding is particularly promising, and while the later-stage funding gap remains (with US investors leading the charge in rounds over $200M), there’s plenty of room for US VCs to step in. 🌍 Geopolitical Advantage: Being close to the war in Ukraine has allowed European start-ups to rapidly iterate and deploy innovative solutions based on battlefield lessons. This proximity could give Europe a tech edge in areas like drones, AI, and satellites. 🧗 Challenges and Opportunities: European start-ups face cultural and regulatory barriers, especially in securing large-scale public funding and navigating procurement processes. But, there’s a growing push for change—making it easier for these companies to scale and work with government agencies.
