Amazing program that nycoba | NOMA (NY Coalition of Black Architects|National Organization of Minority Architects - NY)
Hold onto your hardhats! OnSite project tour of Terminal Warehouse Simon Willett and Gaurav Sardana from COOKFOX ARCHITECTS led the most recent session of OnSite, a program started by nycobaNOMA to provide opportunities for members to gain AXP experience in the Construction and Evaluation areas that are notoriously difficult for many to gain. NCARB + NOMA’s Baseline on Belonging surveys indicate that this is especially true for women of color and other underrepresented groups. On a chilly and gusty Tuesday morning, attendees were able to get an inside look at the project, an adaptive reuse, expansion and reimagining of a West Chelsea warehouse that once had freight trains running through it on street level railroad tracks, loading and unloading cargo, and connecting directly with shipping vessels on the Hudson River. Eventually the street level tracks gave way to the elevated tracks of the Highline due to safety concerns for pedestrians, and the warehouse fell into decline before being resurrected for a time as the Tunnel nightclub in the '80’s and ‘90’s. The renovation creates retail, food & beverage, event space, and amenities including a bike club on the lower levels, allowing pedestrians to traverse the publicly accessible passages running both east-west and north-south. A section of the original railway track is visible through an opening in the floor that will soon be encased in glass. Attendees were able to explore these spaces and the thoughtfully planted courtyard before heading to the upper floors. A six-story ‘overbuild’ addition supported on super columns, with its many private terraces, double-height spaces and variety of construction methods and materials defines reimagined workspaces. From brick archways to deep timber beams and joists, to concrete expanses surrounded by metal and glass, the COOKFOX Architects team explained their design vision and multi-year process of getting this project to its current stage of construction. Our (hard)hats are off to another successful, educational and informative construction site tour!
