This morning, I was reading my Apple News feed, and this article reminded me just how far we’ve come. Back in 2009, UCSF’s Dr. Ying-Hui Fu, Ph.D., discovered a mutation in the DEC2 gene that lets some lucky people thrive on just 4-6 hours of sleep—talk about winning the genetic lottery! For the rest of us, we were out of luck. But that’s changing fast. From brain-stimulating headbands to circadian-resetting light masks, wearables are making quality sleep more accessible than ever. At NextSense, we’re moving beyond tracking data to actually boosting users’ deep sleep (and a lot more)—no genetic mutations required. Expect to hear a lot more from us soon! This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to speak at TEDx Palo Alto's "Ideas and Ideals" Event, where I shared my story and my experience with polyphasic sleeping, or what I call, "Paleo Sleeping." I believe that by understanding and personalizing our sleep patterns, we can tap into restorative power throughout the day, not just during the night. Think about how personalized rest can enhance our potential. How much more could you achieve if you had perfect sleep, for your body, every day? A week ago I was presenting to the distinguished audience of Tech Pioneers at the Annual Meeting of New Champions hosted by World Economic Forum. While I can’t share a recording, I will share the five key points from my presentation and the Q & A. 1) BCI (Brain Computer Interface) traditionally has been about moving pixels on a screen (think Neuralink). Innovations in the space are redefining BCI to include “brain state” modulation. Awake to sleep, sleep to awake, drowsy to alert, unfocused to focused… 2) With a closed loop system, the brain/mind connection is strengthened allowing for human intent to modulate the brain state. 3) Mind mirrors are coming that allow people to witness their own mental state and adjust to the occasion (many say this is the goal and benefit of long term meditation, no attachment to a fixed ego-determined mental state) 4) Privacy has never been a higher priority given the sensitivity of brain data 5) That said, the recent advancements in AI do not directly apply to EEG. Deep neural nets even at Google have not yielded better results on epilepsy datasets than logistic regression and non DL approaches.
