Publicly appointed boards and commissions in local, regional and state government are a hidden level of power in most communities. “Publicly appointed” means that elected or appointed government officials—like the mayor or county commissioners—choose and place the members of these boards and commissions, instead of those members being directly elected by, and responsive to, the people. Those appointed to these boards are disproportionately older, highly educated, white, homeowner men. When we make decisions that affect all of our lives—across race, place, gender, and more—we must share the power in making those decisions. Come learn how to get a seat on a decision-making table! Join one of our upcoming info sessions: https://buff.ly/41qHGql 1️⃣ Dec. 10, 5:30 – 6:30 pm (Zoom) 2️⃣ Jan. 9, 5:30 – 6:30 pm (In person) 3️⃣ Jan. 14, noon – 1 pm (Zoom) Nexus' Boards & Commissions Leadership Institute is a 7-month fellowship that supports, trains, and helps place BIPOC and other underrepresented community members on city and county publicly appointed boards and commissions. Eight years ago, HwaJeong Kim was volunteering at her local library and serving on her neighborhood district council. She loved her community, and she was motivated to do more to give back. That’s when she found our Boards & Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI). The skills and connections helped HwaJeong build confidence and take her next steps. She went on to serve on the Saint Paul Planning Commission and work as the Legislative Aide for Saint Paul’s Ward 5 City Councilmember before being elected to the role herself! ➡️ BCLI helps BIPOC and other historically oppressed people serve at all levels of government. Join us in helping marginalized people have a seat at the table! Whether you can contribute $20 or a story about what Nexus means to you, you will continue to make our work possible. Make a donation at https://buff.ly/49mGE09 ➡️ As we reflect on the last two decades and look toward the years to come, we want to know: What does Nexus mean to you? Whether you were part of Payne-Lake Community Partners at the beginning or discovered Nexus this year, we want to hear from you! Share your story at https://buff.ly/49oWNlR

Congratulations to our grantmaking partner NDN Collective on the second year of their Collective Abundance Fund! They have gifted almost $16 million to nearly 400 Indigenous people in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota over the last couple years! Nexus’ Open Road Fund and NDN Collective’s Collective Abundance Fund were resourced by the Bush Foundation to help address racial wealth gaps between white communities and Indigenous and Black communities in Minnesota and the Dakotas. Our friends at NDN Collective are dedicated to building Indigenous power — creating sustainable solutions on Indigenous terms through organizing, activism, philanthropy, grantmaking, capacity-building, and narrative change. Congrats on another abundant year! This is NDN Collective’s second year distributing $8 million dollars to nearly TWO HUNDRED relatives through our Collective Abundance Fund. Within these past two years, the Collective Abundance Fund funded almost $16 million to nearly four hundred relatives. What is the Collective Abundance Fund? The Collective Abundance Fund is a grant for Indigenous individuals and families who reside within the tri-state region of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This grant is an opportunity for Indigenous Peoples to build or re-build their wealth to have a good life. Why is NDN Collective providing this fund? The purpose of the grant is to address the wealth gap among Indigenous individuals and families. We see this work as a way to advance the dismantling of exploitative, and extractive economic systems that have not worked for our People, which includes defining wealth from our Indigenous perspective. “The Collective Abundance Fund is part of the larger movement to dismantle colonial and capitalist systems that have negatively impacted Indigenous People for hundreds of years,” said Gaby Strong, Vice President of NDN Collective.. Congratulations to our awardees! We look forward to seeing you continue to grow your life with positive abundance. 📖 To learn more, read our recent press release: ndnco.cc/ncdaetcaf Want to apply?
