Dear NFCB Members, As 2024 draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve shared and the community we continue to build—together. This year marked the beginning of a new chapter with Rima’s first year as NFCB’s CEO. We’ve recommitted to our mission of uplifting and empowering community broadcasters nationwide. Deep listening and collaboration are at the heart of our work, we have collectively navigated challenges, embraced opportunities, and renewed our sense of purpose. We also want to offer a special note of gratitude to Kerry Semrad - NFCB’s Board President and General Manager of KZUM. Kerry’s joy, creativity, and leadership have been a source of light and inspiration for all of us. Her dedication to community broadcasting and to NFCB’s mission continues to help guide our work and strengthen this network. As we look ahead to 2025—NFCB’s 50th anniversary year—there is much to celebrate and much to aspire to. From the 50th Anniversary Conference in Salt Lake City to new opportunities for connection and growth, we remain committed to ensuring that you, our members, have what you need to thrive. On behalf of of the NFCB staff, and the board, thank you for your tireless efforts in keeping the spirit of community broadcasting alive. You are the heart of this network, and we are honored to stand beside you. Wishing you all peace, rest, and hope for the year ahead. Together, let’s make 2025 a year to remember. With gratitude and solidarity, Rima, Gretchen & Serah P.S. Want to make a year-end gift to support us? Visit: https://lnkd.in/e_PuD9kz

National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) Rima's post-election thoughts... Hello friends, In times like these, we have a powerful opportunity—and a responsibility—to double down on fact-based news and information that only our hyper-local stations can provide. The outcome of the national election highlights on-going divisions in our country. We must remind ourselves that diversity of opinions and friendships with others who think different from us is possible!! Our community radio stations are uniquely positioned to rise above the divisions by doing what we do best: serving as a hub for connection, a civic safety net; and a catalyst for music and cultural discovery. Our listeners count on us to provide not only accurate reporting but also stories that bridge communities and offer insights from a wide range of perspectives. We can be a place where people come together, where diverse voices—especially those historically marginalized—are heard, valued, and given space to speak their truths. Our stations can be a haven where hate, bigotry, misogyny, and anti-facts are called out, as we work to create inclusive spaces that are safe and respectful. We are allies to all our neighbors, fully committed to shaping communities that serve everyone, not just a privileged few. The National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) will continue to invest in the skills of adaptive capacity and resilience for all our member stations. We believe in ensuring that community radio remains an essential resource, able to respond to the needs of communities across the country and remain vital in a rapidly changing world. By standing firm in our mission, we create a path toward unity and understanding, supporting our stations in their work to uplift communities with truth, music, culture, and connection. Let’s move forward with strength and purpose, committed to building a future that honors diversity, empathy, and shared progress. Be well and take care, Rima:)

Our Communities Are Ours to Shape Dear NFCB Members, As Election Day unfolds, we know many of you—and your listeners—may be feeling a mix of anticipation, hope, and anxiety. This is a powerful moment for us as community broadcasters to reflect on the role we play in our communities, offering spaces where voices, music and perspectives can come together in thoughtful dialogue. At its heart, community radio is about building trust and strengthening bonds. In these times, our stations can serve as pillars of stability, sharing stories, resources, and local insights that resonate with the communities we serve. No matter the outcome, we have the power to help people feel connected, informed, and engaged. Let's remind ourselves that communities are ours to shape—and that every broadcast, every conversation, and every moment of airtime is a chance to bring people together. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to making a difference. Onwards, Gretchen, Rima & Serah NFCB STAFF

Thanks Current: News for Public Media for publishing A. Rima Dael's thoughts on Bowling Alone.
Before embracing Robert Putnam’s research on social capital, stations should look to more inclusive models for building civic engagement, writes National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) CEO A. Rima Dael.
