With the New Hampshire Legislature set to convene on Wednesday for Organizing Day, we're pleased to present our latest Gender Matters report: "Women and the 2024 General Election Results." Women's representation dropped in the NH House and Senate despite women winning at the top of the ticket and electing women in important leadership roles. Though Vice President Kamala Harris didn't win the Presidential election, she did win in New Hampshire. New Hampshire also elected Kelly Ayotte as Governor, only the third woman to be elected Governor of New Hampshire and Maggie Goodlander to the Second Congressional District, replacing retiring Congresswoman Annie Kuster. The New Hampshire Senate and House will elect women in leadership roles for the upcoming session including Senator Sharon Carson as Senate President, Senator Regina Birdsell as Senate Majority Leader, Senator Rebecca Perkins Kwoka as Senate Minority Leader, and Representative Alexis Simpson as House Minority Leader. The NH Senate decreased from 50% to 42% women and the NH House decreased from 37% to 36% women. There will, however, be more House Republican women (60) than ever before though they still trail House Democratic Women (83). The Executive Council remains 40% women with Councilor Janet Stevens and Councilor-elect Karen Liot Hill. Two women were elected County Sheriff, Katheryn Mone in Strafford and Jillian Myers in Grafton, the first (and second!) time New Hampshire has ever elected women to serve as Sheriff.

Regardless of the outcome of your race, we can’t wait to see how you continue serving your communities! We are especially proud of the five Women Run! alums from 2024 who ran for office: Christal Lloyd, Charlotte Fyfe, Karen Burnett-Kurie, Eleana Marie Colby, and Kara Roy. We are thrilled 49 Women Run! alums were on the ballot and 28 won their elections, and look forward to working with them—and all legislators—on policies that will improve the lives of Granite State women and girls.
