The streets of this new district in the Netherlands will be home to kids, pedestrians and bikes: no cars allowed. World Economic Forum reports on the soon-to-be developed district in Utrecht that prioritizes people and sustainability over cars. Merwede will be almost completely car free. Walls and courtyards will be covered by greenery and rooftops will feature solar panels. As there's only room for parking for 1 out of 3 households, the 12.000 residents will share a fleet of cars that are parked on the outskirts. Nearby public transportation connects them to all parts of the Netherlands. Multiple stakeholders were involved in the design, including BURA urbanism, Gemeente Utrecht and 10 owners. Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day to remember and honor the 6 million Jewish who died under Nazism. Today, January 27, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. The Holocaust not only took the lives of innocent people, but also culture, peace, and the future of an entire community. The story of Anne Frank is one of the most well-known. A Jewish girl who was forced into hiding at age 13 in an attempt to escape Nazi persecution. Together with her parents, sister, and four additional Jews, she was confined to a concealed annex in the back of a building on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After more than two years in hiding, they were discovered and deported to concentration camps. While hiding, Anne wrote a diary, and her father Otto, the only survivor of their family, published the diary, becoming one of the most read books of all time. You can find a full-scale replica of the Annex where Anne and her family were hiding in the recently opened exhibition in New York. Let's keep learning from one of our greatest teachers: history.
