  • How do you know what you do matters? I think that's a question we have all asked ourselves from time to time. Today I spent the day with this group and the Sisters Health Foundation doing Ripple Effects Mapping about how Nonprofits LEAD has impacted our lives, the nonprofit sector and the community in our region. It was a fun way to capture how significant an impact your organization has made in the community! There were a ton of great takeaways, but one of the participants said, you can really tell the difference between a nonprofit who has engaged with NPL and one who hasn't - that's a HUGE testimony. Another participant said that it has been very helpful to see how NPL has contributed to the long-term sustainability of their organization. Long-term sustainability -- YES! - isn't that what we are all wanting?! What are some creative ways you have captured information about your impact? If you'd love to explore new ways to capture your impact or to share it out with stakeholders, I would love to chat about it. Book a quick call with me - https://lnkd.in/gKmbWEfS

  • 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆? Grants are powerful tools when used strategically. But before expanding programs, take a moment to assess your internal resources and infrastructure. Capacity building means strengthening your organization to serve effectively, ensuring you're here not just today but for all the tomorrows. Key Areas to Evaluate Before Writing Your Next Grant: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗴: Do you have the team (paid or volunteer) to manage new initiatives without burnout? Consider grants for training, part-time staff, or professional development. 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: Are you limping along with outdated tools? Build upgrades into grant proposals, from new systems to staff training and tech support. 3️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: Are your operations streamlined (e.g., financial management, program evaluation)? Grants can help fund tools like QuickBooks or external consultants to refine your systems. 4️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Strong leadership at both the staff and board levels is critical for growth. Capacity-building grants can fund consulting or training for leadership development. 5️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Does your funding base support ongoing projects after grants run out? Build fundraising plans or educational outreach into your grant applications. 💡 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Instead of expanding a food distribution program to reach more people, consider deepening your impact. Add a nutrition education component for current participants. It’s about serving smarter, not stretching thinner. The Bottom Line: Every grant should be an investment in your nonprofit’s sustainability. Address capacity gaps now to create a future-ready organization. 💪 ✨ Let’s brainstorm your capacity gaps and turn them into opportunities for growth! • This metaphor really struck me: “You can't discuss the ocean with a well-frog—he's limited by the space he lives in. You can't discuss ice with a summer insect—he's bound to a single season.” So often, nonprofit CEOs and Executive Directors are expected to juggle everything—fundraising, donor relationships, strategic planning, program design, and more—all without the resources or support they need. I see this so often: nonprofits feeling stuck or overwhelmed by the demands of sustainable fundraising. Many struggle with unpredictable funding streams, difficulty maintaining donor relationships, or just not having enough time or capacity to think ahead and plan for growth. And here’s something I’ve learned in my own journey: we can’t be all things to all people. While I love wearing different hats in my business—marketing, program development, design—it can be exhausting to try to figure it all out alone. Learning without a guide takes double the time, double the challenges, and drains your energy in ways that are hard to recover from. I’ve done it both ways. I’ve pushed through trial and error, but I’ve also leaned on mentors who helped me gain clarity and confidence in areas I didn’t know how to tackle alone. Those moments of support made all the difference for me—not just professionally, but personally, too. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping nonprofit leaders. I believe that with the right support and tools, you can learn how to build sustainable fundraising systems, develop stronger donor relationships, and feel more confident in navigating the challenges of growth. If any of this resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What challenges are you facing in your nonprofit right now? Let’s start a conversation.

  • Crafting an effective grant proposal requires a strategic approach. Let's examine the crucial elements: 📌 Executive Summary: Concise overview of your project, capturing the essence of your proposal. Often written last but appears first. 🎯 Statement of Need: Clear articulation of the problem your project addresses. Use data to substantiate the need and demonstrate your understanding. 🔬 Project Description: Detailed explanation of your proposed solution. Include goals, objectives, methods, and timeline. 📊 Evaluation Plan: Outline how you'll measure success. Specify metrics, data collection methods, and reporting processes. 💰 Budget: Comprehensive financial plan. Include detailed line items, justifications, and any matching funds or in-kind contributions. 🏆 Organizational Background: Highlight your nonprofit's qualifications, track record, and capacity to implement the project successfully. 🤝 Sustainability Plan: Explain how the project will continue after grant funding ends. Address long-term financial and operational sustainability. 📄 Appendices: Supporting documents such as IRS determination letter, board list, financial statements, and letters of support. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆: With foundation giving reaching $103.53 billion in 2023, a well-structured proposal is key to accessing these funds. • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 Grant writing is an art and a science. Let's explore key errors to sidestep: 🔍 Insufficient Research: Failing to thoroughly understand the funder's interests and priorities. Always align your proposal with the grantor's mission and guidelines. 📝 Ignoring Instructions: Not following application guidelines precisely. This simple oversight can disqualify even the most promising proposals. 🗣️ Overuse of Jargon: Using industry-specific terms excessively. Strive for clarity and accessibility in your language. 📊 Weak Data Presentation: Failing to support claims with solid, relevant statistics. Quantify your impact and back assertions with credible data. 💰 Budgetary Inconsistencies: Presenting budgets that don't align with the narrative or contain errors. Ensure financial projections are accurate and justified. 🎯 Lack of Clear Objectives: Failing to articulate specific, measurable goals. Use the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) for your objectives. 📚 Overlooking the Importance of Storytelling: While data is crucial, neglecting to humanize your proposal can make it less compelling. Balance statistics with impactful narratives. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆: In 2023, foundation giving reached $103.53 billion. Avoiding these common mistakes can significantly increase your chances of accessing these funds.
