Working Together for a Healthy Coast
About us
The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the coast of North Carolina through programs that: keep the public informed about coastal management issues; educate about the coastal environment; advocate for sound coastal management decisions; and fix degraded coastal wetlands, watersheds and water quality. Since its grassroots formation in 1982, the federation has worked to engage tens of thousands of people in helping to keep the North Carolina coast healthy and pristine. Through partnerships and hands-on involvement from over 16,000 supporters, the federation seeks to engage as many people as possible in being good stewards of the coast. What we do Advocate The federation works with local, state and federal agencies to enhance environmental standards and develop more effective coastal habitat protection and restoration policies. Full-time professional coastal advocates and a contract lobbyist work with community volunteers to keep a close eye on the enforcement of environmental programs and environmental rules and legislation. Restore Land purchases and cooperative agreements with private landowners have enabled the federation to restore and protect almost 100,000 acres of coastal habitats since 1996. Working with community volunteers, students and contractors, we build, enhance and preserve oyster reefs, living shorelines, wetlands, shorebird nesting sites and native coastal forests. We also retrofit farm drainage systems and neighborhoods to reduce the amount of polluted stormwater reaching our coastal waters. Educate The federation educates thousands of people each year through volunteer opportunities with our restoration projects, field trips, in-school programs, conferences, professional workshops and community outings. Our education efforts seek to foster awareness and appreciation for the coast, while encouraging stewardship of our coastal waterways and water quality.

"Clean water is the lifeblood of everything we do, it feeds us." - Captain John Mallette. NO WETLANDS, NO SEAFOOD: In the Southeast, nearly all the commercial catch and more than half of the recreational harvest are fish and shellfish that depend on wetlands. Commercial fisherman and charter boat captain John Mallette of Southern Breeze Seafood LLC understands this better than anyone. This past weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting 26 students from Elizabeth City State University's HBCUs Outside cohort for an unforgettable day of exploration and learning at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, with sunny skies and perfect conditions for adventure! Before joining us at Jockey's Ridge, the students had the chance to explore the maritime forest Nags Head Woods, another intriguing coastal habitat. For many students, this was their first time visiting Jockey's Ridge, and it was an incredible opportunity to experience the diverse ecosystems within the park. Our day began with a visit to the Jockey's Ridge Visitors Center, followed by lunch and an engaging private program led by Park Ranger Justin Barnes. The group then embarked on a guided hike across the living dune, exploring various habitats on the way to the living shoreline. Just in time for National Estuaries Week, we learned about the estuarine system near the dunes, explored the water and nearby trails, and even had the chance to contribute to the Coastal Federation's restoration project by planting salt marsh cord grasses. It was a day filled with learning, fun, and connection with nature, and we couldn’t be prouder of the enthusiasm and engagement shown by the students. #CoastalEducation #NationalEstuariesWeek

Without wetlands there would be no seafood. Few understand this better than James Beard Award-winning chef and Saltbox Seafood Joint owner, Ricky Moore. Growing up in New Bern, North Carolina, Moore harvested wild mussels and sea beans from the wetlands in his own backyard. “My biggest concern is water quality. If that’s not good, the fish won’t be there. Without wetlands, there’s no place for fish to reproduce and grow,” says Moore. But today, our wetlands are in danger. A United States Supreme Court ruling last year dismantled protections that safeguarded wetlands for more than 50 years. Learn more from Chef Ricky Moore, Captain John Mallette, and SELC Water Program Leader Kelly Moser about why we need to protect our wetlands for future generations: https://lnkd.in/eqjjrcJy We are proud to be a longtime partner of the North Carolina Coastal Federation. The Coastal Federation is working to restore wild oyster populations by recycling oyster shells and putting those shells back into the water. It’s a critical step in ensuring North Carolina’s coastal ecology and economy thrive. Our shell recycling partners are a crucial part of the Federation’s recycling efforts, and there are several resources available to help support shell recycling. If you’d like to take a closer look at how recycled oyster shells are paving the way for the next generation of oysters and learn more about how some of the oysters at your favorite local restaurants end up on your plate check out the video below! Thank you to Ghost Fleet Oyster Company, Shuckin' Shack- Surf City, and 1413 Visuals for helping us create this video! https://lnkd.in/egetpYkf
