"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." -- Isaiah 7:14 Merry Christmas from your friends at the CCCG! May the joy and peace delivered to us by our Savior's birth inspire us to be Christ-like with everyone we encounter, both during the Christmas season and beyond.

Students like Haley make our work at the University of Notre Dame so rewarding. We are continuously impressed by their intellectual curiosity, their charity in conversation with one another, and their propensity to become future political leaders of our beloved country. As the fall semester ends, I want to thank the Notre Dame Center for Citizenship & Constitutional Government for my incredible experience as a 2024 Tocqueville Fellow. From thought-provoking and challenging seminars to private meetings with speakers such as Governor Ron DeSantis, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, John Yoo, and Harry Litman, the fellowship gave me much to think about. Discussions with an intellectually diverse cohort of students pushed me to refine my own views, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Center's many events and opportunities for conversation. Thank you especially to Tyler Castle, Anna Bradley, and Professor Muñoz for adding so much to my semester through the program. Next, off to the University of Galway for a spring semester in Ireland!

“For me,” DeSantis answered, “conservative leadership is about having a certain foundation that you bring to the job that you are doing,” including “a fidelity to the founding principles of this country.” DeSantis explained that such an understanding of conservative leadership, though not an end in itself, is essential to “generating good outcomes for the people you represent.” Generating such “good outcomes” is the ultimate end that a conservative leader should be oriented towards, DeSantis indicated. In Florida, the outcomes DeSantis outlined as his goals as governor are “to preserve a free society in the state that I govern and … to ensure that all of my citizens have what Abraham Lincoln called an open field and fair chance to make the most of their God-given talents.” Read current Tocqueville Fellow Luca Fanucchi's write-up of Governor DeSantis's recent visit to the University of Notre Dame here: https://lnkd.in/ep7Rqqqx

"We believe very strongly in Notre Dame's distinctive Catholic character, and that's the reason we're here. Notre Dame matters, Notre Dame is important, and for us, it's been a big part of our professional vocation to feel like, not only are we doing our own scholarship, but we are also working towards the university's broader mission.” Read more about our friend and colleague Rick Garnett, professor at Notre Dame Law School and close collaborator with the CCCG, his vocational journey, and his recent invitation to join the American Academy of Sciences and Letters. https://lnkd.in/gFmTqSNc

"Dr. Bhattacharya criticized the global adoption of strict lockdown measures, arguing that these policies had devastating, far-reaching effects, particularly on vulnerable populations in poorer countries. He highlighted reports of severe collateral damage that 'should shock the conscience and heart,' pointing to rising rates of starvation, disrupted education, and increased poverty. He detailed how, in countries like India, millions of migrant workers were forced to leave cities, often traveling on foot back to their villages with no way to make a livelihood. On the day that this lockdown was announced 'a thousand died on route' with more suffering to come. This displacement, combined with economic shutdowns, exacerbated poverty levels and reversed years of progress in reducing global poverty."
