Kaleb Randolph was one of over 250 new nurse graduates to join Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s 12-month residency program in 2024. Unlike traditional six-month programs, this extended format gives nurses time to explore and find their best fit by working with preceptors and rotating through different units each quarter to gain experience with diverse patient populations. Residency programs not only improve patient outcomes but are also effective at retaining nurses long-term. The goal is for many to stay on with Novant Health beyond the residency. More than 90% do. Roses are red, violets are blue, our cardiologists keep hearts strong—and we appreciate all that you do. Thank you, Molly Grantham, for shining a light on the incredible dedication and life-changing work of our cardiology team!
Speaking. Writing. Living. #BetOnYourself. 4x-Emmy winner. 3x-author. National speaker. Charity auctioneer. Proud mom.
Happy Valentine’s Day. Let’s talk about heart. Cardiology is a male-dominated field. It's notable to say that Novant Health has three female cardiologists on staff in Charlotte, with a fourth hired to start next month. I met these three doctors yesterday. As you guys know, Novant is powering our “Bet On Yourself Summit 2.0” in April. As part of that relationship, I'm getting introduced to people inside Novant who bet on themselves. If our hearts are our motherships... let’s meet three women you might want in charge of yours. To my right: Dr. Sunita Sharma, based in Matthews. She's personable, chatty, and after graduating 12th grade (in her home country of India), got into med school. She originally started in internal medicine. “I ended up coming to the US to do research and a PhD program,” she says. “I realized I missed talking to patients.” Dr. Sharma was planning a return to internal medicine until a family member got sick with heart disease. “I helped them through surgeries,” she says. “It made me think cardiology is what I’m meant to do. I’ve now been with Novant over two years, but a decade in the field.” Dr. Leigh Younce, in the middle, is also in the Matthews clinic. She’s a veteran employee (29th year!), born and raised on a farm in Union County. Talk about full circle—Dr. Younce now lives in Union County not far from where she was raised. “I always knew I wanted to be in health and life science,” she says. “My mom was a science teacher. We took care of animals on our farm. I went to NC State, pre-vet.” She chuckles. “I quickly switched to pre-med.” Once in med school, she couldn’t help but be attracted to the heart. “I was born with a heart defect,” she says. “I had surgery at 3-and-a-half. My past was always driving me. Cardiology also really suits the way I learn. It’s very visual. There’s so much we can do for people! Not just in diagnosis but in prevention, treatment, and cures. Compared to other specialties, I think cardiology is ideal.” To my far left is Dr. Shana Greif. She started at Novant a year-and-a-half-ago and is based in Elizabeth. The concepts around cardiology—and a love of detective work—led her to where she is today. “Originally, I thought I’d be a general cardiologist,” Dr. Greif says. “I like working with all different types of cardiac diseases. But in my fellowship, I went into the EP (Electrophysiology) lab. I loved it! It’s its own little world, separate from the rest of cardiology. It’s like playing detective. You have to work to analyze interesting EKG’s. And once procedures are done, you see people feel better. You have a role in making a quality of life more fulfilling.” I mentioned a fourth doctor starting next month. Dr. Desiree Dawson will be at the Novant clinic in Steele Creek. So today, as you acknowledge people who make your heart skip a beat, maybe also give a little love to cardiologists. On behalf of Dr. Sharma, Dr. Younce, and Dr. Greif… thank you. Bet On Yourself, -Molly
