Your Association has prioritized member communication since its inception. Efforts to create an educational journal began in 1868, culminating in the publication of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘢 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳 in 1872. Despite early success, it ceased publication in 1922, replaced by the 𝘕𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘢 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭, which gained significant popularity and financial success, supported largely by advertising revenue. This journal served as an essential platform for professional dialogue and resources, including advertisements for teaching aids and personal services. In 1947, the Association began another publication in a radically different format. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘢 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘕𝘦𝘸𝘴 appeared as a newspaper for members and was believed to be the first weekly newspaper published by any state education association in the United States. Later renamed 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘚𝘌𝘈 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦, the publication evolved to a magazine layout in 1994, maintaining strong membership engagement and demonstrating the correlation between robust communication and organizational growth. Today, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 continues to tell the stories of Nebraska's educators, celebrating their contributions and fostering a sense of community within the profession. NDE SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON NEBRASKA’S COLLEGE AND CAREER READY STANDARDS FOR FINE ARTS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND WORLD LANGUAGES Nebraska state statute requires updates to Nebraska College and Career Ready content standards every seven years. Current standards for Fine Arts, Physical Education, Social Studies, and World Languages were adopted by the Nebraska State Board of Education in 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2019, respectively. The information collected will be used as part of the standards review and revision process. Nebraska educators from pre-kindergarten to post-secondary, including public and non-public schools, will help develop drafts of the proposed standards for each content area. Once completed, the standards will create the framework for Arts Education, Physical Education, Social Studies, and World Language education in Nebraska. Completion is expected in the fall of 2026. Nebraska content area standards reflect the knowledge and skills students are expected to learn in a given content area. By setting clear benchmarks for learning, content area standards provide guidance to teachers as they develop learning experiences for students. Standards do not prescribe particular curriculum, lessons, teaching techniques, or activities. Decisions about curriculum and instruction are made locally by individual school districts and classroom teachers. The public input survey for Fine Arts, Physical Education, Social Studies, and World Languages is available for review here: www.bit.ly/NDEStandards The public input survey will close on Friday, January 31st, 2025. Feedback may also be provided via the following email addresses: nde.fineartsstandardsinput@nebraska.gov, nde.pestandardsinput@nebraska.gov, nde.socialstudiesstandardsinput@nebraska.gov, or nde.worldlanguagesstandardsinput@nebraska.gov.

In 1924, Nebraska educators were encouraged to unite for a shared mission: "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘢 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴’ 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘤𝘰-𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘕𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘢’𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴. In 1943, the first due process law was passed, providing a probationary period of three to five years, but it applied only to teachers in Lincoln and Omaha. It wasn’t until 1971 that all Nebraska teachers gained similar protections. This achievement is part of NSEA’s proud history. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 & 𝗡𝗼𝘄: Some truths never fade. From The Omaha World-Herald, as printed in the Nebraska Educational Journal, February 1923: "What is more important than the work of teaching? It is the greatest task that the state can engage in. The hope of democracy lies in an enlightened people. If we would make our own country safe for democracy, we will stress education’s value with all our might. And that does not mean education for the few. It means an opportunity must be given to every child, without distinction, to cultivate the latent intelligence within it. Too little we appreciate the contributions of good teachers. Too seldom we give them the word that shows we value their work as most important." Join us in supporting and uplifting educators—become a member of the association today! www.nsea.org/JoinNow.
