Who said crowd work is just for comedians? Some great questions came from the crowd at today's event "The VC Perspective: Beyond Tech, Investing in People" and the panelists were incredibly generous with their advice. Some hard truths were shared to founders: 🙍♀️ Expect a conversation from investors about whether you're the right CEO. You may or may not be, but be prepared to have the conversation 👉 Expect change - in deep tech the team you end with is likely to be very different from the team you start with 👣 It's currently a challenge attracting a lead investor And some tips: Cather Simpson - we look for people who surround themselves with people that are better than they are, supplement their skills in some way. Mat R. - be able to communicate in manageable chunks up and down the chain. Mitali Purohit - with science and engineering we know some things aren't going to work out, we loooove people who communicate and it doesn't all have to be good news. Introducing the newly awarded Ārohia Trailblazers 🚀 Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, Hon Judith Collins KC MP has today announced the second round of Ārohia Trailblazer grant recipients at the Aerospace New Zealand Summit today in Christchurch. The Ārohia Trailblazer Grant awards ventures that are breaking new ground with novel products and services, and are creating opportunities for other Aotearoa New Zealand innovators. An incredibly inspiring ‘Thrive’ Women Leaders by the Circle event last night ‘Wahine with boundless ambition: Taking Kiwi Businesses to the World’ where we heard from Erica Lloyd from Zenno Astronautics, Stephanie Pow from Crayon & Mitali Purohit at Nuance Connected Capital on their journeys and what does it take to aim far and charge forward with a clear vision in mind? We love the partnership and shared vision with Xero on this series and Bridget Snelling facilitated the insightful and honest conversation about the highs and lows, opportunities and challenges of being a women leader in export-related businesses in New Zealand. Last week, I had a fantastic opportunity to spend time with the Massey Ventures team to learn more about how University Commercialisation offices operate and support innovation. Universities are often the major sources of our pipeline for Deep tech VC funds like ourselves (after they receive their pre-seed investment), so getting time to understand their ways of working and challenges was invaluable. 🌟 Takeaways 🌟 : 🧠 Deep tech can take a long time from first cheque to exit. It can also take a really long time for ideas to move to commercial solutions in universities (8+years!). 🧠 Take the time to understand the background of each opportunity. It’s easy to say the inventor doesn’t own enough shareholding, but understanding the context is crucial. 🧠 Not every invention fits a spinout. There's a time and place for licensing deals, and finding the right path for each innovation is key. 🧠 In addition to generating pipeline of innovations, one of Massey core focus is developing entrepreneurial talent within the university. Big thanks to Mark Cleaver and the stellar team Dan Carlisle, Sean Mackay, Jasmine Nash (and Ella Moffat) who were super hosts and allowed me to pick their brains - often.
