I can’t believe we did that. Over 48 hours Olivia Wong, Ilan Attie Picker, Jack Yang and myself represented Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences by designing a campaign asking farmers to recognise and respond to the individual and societal value of preparing for biosecurity emergencies. The QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Nudgeathon was truly one of those “you had to be there” experiences that I just can't distil into a LinkedIn post. But I'm about to try...
Biosecurity is a shared responsibility that all Australians have a role in, from rural grower to unsuspecting citizen.
Speaking to industry experts from the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative, a frequent response was “it depends”, “yes and no” and “it’s complicated”, underscoring the multitude of variables influencing adoption of biosecurity practices in farms. Safe to say it solidified that this was no small feat!
But this didn’t stop twenty one hardworking teams from tackling Australia's biosecurity problem head-on in varying different ways and from a vast range of disciplines.
Thanks so much Stephen Whyte for running this event so exceptionally. I would recommend anyone interested in applied psychology and behavioural science to participate!
And leaving the best until last, Meg Allan, a past MAPper from Empirica Research, was an invaluable source of wisdom and support. Thank you so much for being such a rock and going truly above and beyond to help us stay on track.. and for picking up the phone at 11pm under an ultimatum to tell us our idea was a good one, so we could gather the strength to keep going. That call saved our sanity.
And of course my teammates Olivia, Ilan, and Jack. I’m so incredibly impressed with you for putting in much more than 100% to get the job done, and present something we were proud of.
Olivia's skill in synthesising research into creative solutions was unparalleled, Ilan's talent in rebutting our ideas was instrumental in refining our solution, and Jack's unwavering focus and cool calm and collected attitude was indispensable during the final stretch.
It was wonderful to see you all work. I’d do it again if it was with you!
