Nearly 20 years ago, a dedicated team at NYU Langone Health, including critical care specialist Dr. Ronald Goldenberg, saved Jennifer Takos' life. This past August, fate brought them together again when they discovered that their sons were moving into the same college dorm. After the successful delivery of her son, John, via c-section, Jennifer suffered respiratory failure due to a rare autoimmune condition called ANCA-positive vasculitis, triggered by childbirth. For weeks, she fought for her life in the ICU, with Dr. Goldenberg visiting her multiple times a day. “He was just above and beyond in every way,” Jennifer remembers. When she was finally discharged, Dr. Goldenberg personally carried John to the car. In the years that followed, Jennifer experienced several relapses, but Dr. Goldenberg coordinated her treatments in the hospital while pulmonologist Dr. Doreen Addrizzo-Harris managed her ongoing care. Thanks to a carefully tailored medication regimen, Jennifer now leads a fulfilling life, running restaurants with her husband and supporting her son's hockey aspirations. Over the past decade, the team has demonstrated unwavering dedication and expertise, providing exceptional care to children and their families. From stabilizing critically ill patients in complex situations to ensuring seamless transport, their efforts have made a significant impact. Their commitment to excellence continues to set the standard for pediatric care.

Our recent “Sala-bration” event honoring pediatric surgeon Dr. Jason Fisher raised over $3.2 million for our Sala Institute for Child and Family Centered Care!   Held on November 12, the celebration highlighted the vital work of Sala Institute, which has built meaningful partnerships among healthcare providers, children, and families for over a decade. Founded by Trudy Elbaum Gottesman and Robert W. We’re thrilled to spotlight Dr. Josef Coresh, who’s pioneering new approaches to healthy aging. At this year’s Milken Institute Future of Health Summit, Dr. Coresh joined an esteemed panel on "What’s Next in Aging"—tackling the big questions about improving health span, addressing caregiver shortages, and ensuring aging adults can thrive in their communities.   In the discussion, Dr. Coresh shared key insights: • Healthy Aging is Multifaceted: “Physical activity is the rising star—key for physical, heart, cognitive health, mood, and sleep.” • Healthcare Transparency is Critical: Dr. Coresh emphasized the need for simplicity and transparency in healthcare: “We need AI and tools to make healthcare more honest and transparent, so patients understand costs and coverage.” • Bridging Knowledge & Action: Combining technology and people is vital to improve outcomes, as shown in NYU Langone’s recent research covered by The Journal of the American Medical Association, where a combination of technology and medical personnel proved most effective in improving patient outcomes.   Dr. Coresh’s work highlights the need for innovative policies, systems, and collaboration to address the challenges of an aging population while ensuring better health outcomes for all.

A surgical team at NYU Langone Health has made history by performing the world’s first fully robotic double lung transplant, representing a major breakthrough in robotic surgery and minimally invasive care—and offering Cheryl Mehrkar a fresh start at life. The pioneering surgery was led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Stephanie Chang, who performed the first robotic single lung transplant in the U.S. just a month earlier. The team successfully transplanted both lungs into Cheryl, who was living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for over a decade, by utilizing small incisions between the ribs and employing the robotic system to carefully remove each lung, prepare the surgical site, and implant the new lungs. For Cheryl—an active adventurer who has explored the world as a scuba divemaster, motorcyclist, and black belt in karate—the transplant represents the beginning of a new chapter. "I'm so grateful to the donor and their family for giving me another chance at life," she says. Cheryl received her new lungs just four days after being placed on the transplant waitlist. “It is one of the greatest privileges to be able to help patients return to a healthy quality of life,” Dr. Chang adds. On November 19th, the Center for Human Genetics and Genomics (CHGG) at NYU Langone Health hosted a successful retreat that brought together faculty, affiliates, and students to share their cutting-edge research. The event featured a series of compelling presentations that highlighted the innovative work being conducted across the Center. The Center was honored to welcome Dr. Richard P. Lifton, President of Rockefeller University, as the keynote speaker. Attendees also participated in an engaging poster session, where researchers showcased their latest findings, sparking lively discussions. Additionally, two thought-provoking roundtable discussions on genetic medicine and education fostered dynamic exchanges of ideas.
