A family- and veterinarian-run animal rescue organization focused on providing a permanent sanctuary for farm animals

About us

We adopt various species of unwanted farm animals and allow them to live the rest of their lives in peace and tranquility. We also educate the community on required care of these animals to improve outcomes for animals like the ones we adopt.

  • We took a class on enrichment for birds in captivity, lead by researchers and employees at zoos and rescues/sanctuaries. We learned that pigeons are super smart and will figure out puzzles. They also love bright colors. So, we found them a puzzle feeder at the thrift store, and it keeps them busy during feeding time. More enrichment reduces boredom, reduces fighting, and makes for happier animals. Oakrock.org #nonprofit #charity #animalrescue #farmanimals

  • Cactus finished his parasite dusting and won't leave Jon's shoulder. Perhaps he is giving Kiwi (in Jon's hands) some moral support? Both Cactus and Kiwi were saved by @oaklandanimalservices and came to our sanctuary in 2023. They get a life of stability and their hated parasite treatments regularly. Oakrock.org

  • Our piebald Muscovy ducks can be hard to tell apart sometimes. 🦆Calypso came to us last year from @oaklandanimalservices after being found as a stray. The girls can tell her apart from Frida because of a butterfly shaped feather pattern on her chest. 🦆Frida came to us last year after her partner was killed by a predator. We can tell her from Calypso by her spotted feet. 🦆Gar is another duck who came to us from @oaklandanimalservices, and she has black spots on her white head. Oakrock.org

  • We're celebrating the long and happy life of our beloved Kotula 🐔, who passed away last week at the age of 18 yrs old 💔. Kotula came to us 1.5 yrs ago at age 17, after her owners had to move out of the country. There were many times we thought it was going to be the end of Kotula, but we started arthritis medications and she got better. And then we were ready to say goodbye, but started acupuncture and she got better. We have SO many photos with Kotula, because she was always being held. We like to think she waited to see the girls one last time the morning she died. The kids went to do her morning feeding and meds before school, and she passed away shortly after saying good morning to the girls. I think she was thanking them one last time for showing her such a wonderful life. Our on-site necropsy shows she likely died quickly from heart disease, and our hearts are hurting so much with her loss. We're so happy we got to know such a wonderful chicken. Oakrock.org

We volunteered at @zenerosity today and added a new acupuncture patient to our patient list. He's a big, lovable fuzzy bug who is suffering from marked hip arthritis. We're hoping that acupuncture will work its magic and help with his pain and mobility. And, we did our usual treatment on our ~30 yr old gelding patient who we've been treating for several months. Susanna learned how to listen for gut sounds without a stethoscope, so she could be aware of signs of colic. What's more beautiful than a nonprofit animal rescue helping another animal nonprofit 💕 Oakrock.org

  • Poe (grey) went back to @oaklandanimalservices after being with us for a week because she had an adopter interested in her! ❤️ We brought back Helvetica and Wingdings, who are 2 young neutered males who need a break from the shelter. "The Font Bros" are friendly, sweet, and active little dudes who are looking for their permanent home together. Visit oaklandanimalservices.org to find out how to adopt.

  • Happy National Shelter Appreciation Week! Shelters have a monumental task in their communities: education, rehabilitation, medical care, field rescue, reunification of lost pets, providing safety to animals, investigating cruelty, adoptions...They do it all, and they save lives! Shelter work is not easy. Think about all the happy stories they have, that also come with sad stories of death, abuse, accidents, lack of education in the community. But shelter work keeps going and is an essential part of every community. We have so many animals at our sanctuary - including those we've fostered - whose lives were turned around by shelters. This week, think about the animal shelters in your area and thank your lucky stars that we have resilient shelter employees and volunteers who do a lot of hard work for the love of animals, everyday. 💕 Oakrock.org

  • Welcome to 2 new foster bunnies 🐰from @oaklandanimalservices! Jon Hamm is an adult male neutered gentleman who is outgoing, and the friendliest! He is being treated with twice daily meds for a scrotal hematoma, and doing great! Poe is a female spayed adult bunny who is also the sweetest, and will come running up to you as soon as you enter the room. We love them both. If you're interested in adopting them, visit oaklandanimalservices.org to find out more.

  • 4 years ago, we took Tanya in after her owner died. We thought Tanya had all these chronic age-related issues that were going to be the cause of her euthanasia soon after we adopted her. She's still with us, and is doing better than ever. She's still gets acupuncture to improve her mobility. She gets a special diet and medications to control her allergies. After her morning car ride to drop kids off school, she gets to lay in the sun all day. And she gets post-bath cuddles. Adopt a senior dog. They need cuddling in their sunset years. ❤️🐶❤️ Oakrock.org
