  • The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (#SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (#SBI) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change were reconvene for their 60th sessions (#UNFCCC #SB60) at the World Conference Center Bonn in Bonn from 3 to 13 June 2024. These sessions were designed to shape the agenda for the upcoming climate conference #COP29 taking place from 11 to 22 November 2024, in Baku (Azerbaijan). These biennial gatherings serve as a key platform for advancing climate action, fostering collaboration and building consensus on effective climate policies and implementation strategies. Discussions touched upon, among others: mechanisms to track the extent and distribution of nutrients and #plastic pollution in the ocean; the recently adopted Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (#BBNJ Agreement); approaches such as ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-based solutions, integrated coastal zone management, and adaptive management; #mangrove restoration and nature-based seawalls, which protect against erosion, sequester carbon, and serve as habitat for many species; the need to scale up options to implement ocean-based renewable energy and decarbonize the maritime #industry; the role of #Indigenous Peoples and coastal communities, and the need to protect their rights by implementing free, prior, and informed consent; and the importance of viewing the ocean as intrinsically valuable, not only as a solution to climate change. This is a great step for our integrated dialogue about oceans and climate change. Don’t forget to join our Global Ocean Youth Declaration! 🌊

This past week I took part in the 4th annual UN Climate Change Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue at #UNFCCC #SB60 in Bonn 🇩🇪. I was grateful to be asked to act as a rapporteur again this year for one of the topic 1 breakout groups. The two topics this year were 1. Marine biodiversity conservation and coastal resilience 2. Technology needs for the ocean climate action, including finance links The breakout group reports alongside party and non party stakeholder statements will be compiled into a summary report and brought to #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. I was also honoured to give a statement on behalf of YOUNGO with Eesha Rangani, Ela Gokcigdem, and Mark Haver on a youth perspective. I am grateful to be surrounded by such inspiring youth and people who are passionate about the ocean - so thank you to everyone who contributed to the YOUNGO statement and the dialogue. A special thank you to Jasdeep Randhawa ; and to Niall O'Dea and Julio Cordano on your co-facilitating during the past 2 years. It is always great to see intergenerational inclusion during these processes and dialogues. Also a special thank you to all the amazing rapporteurs, moderators, and panel members!
