Non-profit Organizations
Oceana is dedicated to protecting the world's oceans on a global scale.
About us
Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. Oceana is rebuilding abundant and biodiverse oceans by winning science-based policies in countries that control one-quarter of the world’s wild fish catch. With more than 275 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, oil and plastic pollution, and the killing of threatened species like turtles, whales, and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. A restored ocean means that 1 billion people can enjoy a healthy seafood meal every day, forever. Together, we can save the oceans and help feed the world. Visit Oceana.org to learn more.

🌊 Oceana’s latest factsheet on the 2025 fishing opportunities in the Western Mediterranean is out! Despite some positive trends, overfishing continues to impact 60% of assessed demersal species, with 80% of stocks still below healthy biomass levels. This year’s findings highlight the urgent need for emergency measures and tailored strategies that focus on the most vulnerable species, like European hake, in the Mediterranean Sea. Our recommendations urge 🇪🇸🇫🇷🇮🇹 to act decisively in December’s AGRIFISH Council, ensuring effective fisheries management under the #WestMedMAP framework. Let’s work together to restore and protect the ocean’s biodiversity and resilience. 🔗https://bit.ly/3Z1RQMf #OceanConservation #SustainableFisheries #ProtectOurOceans

We had some brilliant conversations at our event in parliament this week, and it was fantastic to see so many engaged MPs there 👋. We covered some crucial issues, including: 🪸 Banning destructive bottom trawling in our marine protected areas – bulldozing these unique & vulnerable havens is still permitted & it needs to stop. 🛢️ Kicking Big Oil out of our seas – the true extent of oil pollution, which devastates marine life, has been masked by an opaque and misleading reporting system, our new report shows. 🐟 Restoring UK fish populations – our Roadmap to Regeneration gives government a clear course to follow towards thriving seas. Our discussions with parliamentarians explored the next steps for MPs and government and how together we can make healthy seas and thriving coastal communities a reality – Let’s do this! Toby Perkins MP, Roz Savage MBE, Charlotte Cane, Tonia Antoniazzi MP, Caroline Voaden, Vikki Slade, Jayne Kirkham, Perran Moon, Steve Race, Afzal Khan CBE MP, Alison Bennett, Lorraine Beavers, Alex Mayer, Naomi Tilley, Amy Hammond, Alec Taylor, Hugo Tagholm

#Breaking: Oceana Canada’s 2024 Fishery Audit reveals a critical need to protect and rebuild Canada’s fisheries and ocean ecosystems. Despite commitments under the modernized Fisheries Act, only 35% of Canada’s wild fish stocks are currently healthy, with 17% critically depleted. The report highlights a clear opportunity: with focused efforts, Canada could see up to 80% of fish stocks return to healthy levels within a decade—strengthening biodiversity and supporting coastal and Indigenous communities. Oceana Canada is calling on the Canadian government to fully enforce its own laws and take decisive steps toward resilient, abundant oceans that benefit both biodiversity and local economies. 🎣 Overfishing is pushing our ocean to the brink. Four years past the UK's deadline to end overfishing, it’s time for real government action NOW. Ending overfishing is integral to a healthy ocean, which in turn is essential for both communities and planet. 🌍 Our seas can’t wait any longer.
