📢 The 2025 edition of the Ocean Hackathon®, scheduled to take place on 17-19 October 2025, is looking for its host city! Endorsed by the #OceanDecade, the Ocean Hackathon® is a non-stop, 48-hour event coordinated by the Campus mondial de la mer where teams develop prototypes and explore their practical applications using marine data. Ocean Hackathon® has fostered a growing community around ocean conservation and digital innovation since its inception in 2016, expanding to multiple locations across France and internationally. Several months before the event, a call for challenges is issued to gather project proposals from participating towns and cities. The event culminates in a weekend where teams compete, and the top team from each location advances to the International Grand Finale in Brest, France. 👉 If you work in the marine, digital or innovation sector, join the Ocean Hackathon® community by organising the event in your town or city from 17 to 19 October 2025. OCEAN CITIZEN reposted this
"The challenges in #OceanCitizen, from my perspective, so in particularly focusing on marine algal forests, is the completely due environment to deal with because we've been working so far mostly in inter-tidal level and in a micro-tidal system such as the #Mediterranean, while we are going to work in a macro-tidal environment" — Mariachiara Chiantore, Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze del Mare (CoNISMa). We have collected short statements from OCEAN CITIZEN Partners explaining their vision of the project in the first year of work. Exploring our pilot sites 📍 The project’s restoration strategy in this location in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of #Tarragona, Spain, led by the University of Barcelona (UB), involves transplanting #gorgonians. In collaboration with the Natural Art Reef (NAR) Association, we have transplanted gorgonians into the Biotop deployed at the Tarragona coast to assess their resilience and #restoration potential. 🪸📈 This initiative integrates oceanographic sensors and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for continuous #monitoring, providing critical data on gorgonian survival and #ecosystem recovery. The research contributes to a broader strategy for marine habitat restoration, aligning with OCEAN CITIZEN's mission to enhance #biodiversity and ecosystem services in coastal waters. 🔗 Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/dWrUtcrf #ElBiotop #OceanCitizen #MissionOcean #OceanDecade #HorizonEurope #GenerationRestoration #OceanScience #BlueEconomy #OceanLiteracy #2030Agenda #MarineRestoration #biodiversity #marinescience #marinerestoration Universitat de Barcelona

As part of the OCEAN CITIZEN project, the #Tarragona site represents one of the five distinct ecozones included in the initiative. Underwater Gardens International (UGI), in collaboration with a key local stakeholder, the diving center mARdEhIELO, carried out three sediment samplings at different depths. These depths aligned with the area undergoing restoration through the installation of Smart Enhanced Reefs (SER®). The sampling took place using a Van Veen grab at depths of 30, 35, and 40 meters, off the coast of Punta de la Mora. Analyzing the sediment in the implementation area was a crucial step in securing the necessary permits from the administration to initiate restoration activities. That day, the sun shone brightly, and the sea was perfectly still. To top it off, we were lucky enough to spot a group of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) swimming alongside our boat. Perhaps a good omen for the project?
