ODVA recently announced changes to the EtherNet/IP specification including that CIP Safety on EtherNet/IP now allows for Concurrent Connections while Process Device Profiles have expanded to include RTD and thermocouple temperature sensors. CIP Safety with Concurrent Connections allows for communication redundancy between multiple producing and consuming devices for the most critical automation processes that require high availability and functional safety. Process Device Profiles provide standardization for process variables and diagnostics helping system integrators and end users efficiently commission new EtherNet/IP network capable devices and more easily replace EtherNet/IP network devices for optimized plant operations. Thank you to Pal Roach for hosting the Process Solution User Group panel focusing on Cybersecurity Management in a Multiprotocol Ecosystem at Automation Fair 2024. Jack Visoky and Mohd Alam from Rockwell Automation, Michael Clark from OPC Foundation, and Steven Fales from ODVA spoke about the value of end to end security from the device level to the cloud with open standard protocols CIP Security and OPC UA. The panelists also talked about how cybersecurity security regulation is coming with the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) for devices and NIS2 for end users. This makes using CIP Security for device level security and OPC UA for information modeling security an important part of a future oriented defense in depth security approach.
