This Native American Heritage Day, we recognize the unique housing challenges faced by Native American communities and the need for equitable, culturally sensitive affordable housing solutions. Currently, one-third (32%) of Native households on tribal lands live in poverty, compared to 18% nationwide. Over one-third of Native families on tribal lands live in overcrowded homes or homes lacking basic amenities like plumbing and heating. These communities face significant barriers to developing and preserving safe, decent, and affordable housing. By supporting initiatives that address these systemic issues, we can work toward ensuring Native families have access to stable and sustainable homes. On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we must recognize the urgent need for safe, secure housing for survivors of domestic violence. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, over 13,000 requests for services, more than half of which involved housing, went unmet in a single day due to lack of resources. For many women, housing insecurity is intertwined with domestic violence—90% of homeless women have experienced physical or sexual abuse, and 63% have suffered intimate partner violence as adults. Domestic violence is also a leading cause of homelessness, with studies showing that 38% of people experiencing domestic violence become homeless at some point in their lives. Black women and families are disproportionately affected, as 37% of those experiencing homelessness are Black, despite making up only 13% of the population. We must continue to work toward providing safe, affordable housing for survivors so they do not have to choose between returning to their abusers or becoming homeless.
